In this video, I show you how to use a baseplate compass. I was in the forest, and had a compass in my pocket along with my camera equipment, so I figured that I would record this tutorial! Using a compass is relatively simple, and with the right instructions, you will be able to easily navigate your way in any direction.

Thank you so much for the video. Other videos they don't show if you wanted to travel using the different degrees like you did. Then you showed how to reset. My only question is let's say if I want to go west? Do the same rules apply? Will the red arrow point to west or does the red arrow only apply towards the north?

I don’t think this is correct. You need to lay the compass flat and point the big red arrow away from your body. Turn the direction You want to go (say East) on the dial or azimuth ring so that it lines up with big red direction of travel arrow on the plate. Next, stand so that the red part of the spinner (called Red Fred) is lined up inside the outline of an arrow that looks like a little shed. When Red Fred is in the shed you are ready to start walking towards your destination. Red points to magnetic north, not geographically termed North.

Actually when you set the compass to north. It was pointing toward magnetic north. Not geographic north (aka true north). And geographic north can be > 20 degrees east or west of geographic north. Or exactly the same as geographic north. Depending on where you are in the world.

There's a magnetic declination scale printed in the bottom of the compass housing so you can point the compass to geographic north ( aka true north). All you need to know is the magnetic declination for where you are. For example: if magnetic declination is 10 degrees east, you don't point the magnetic needle at the N on the dial. You would turn until the magnetic needle points at 10 on the east mag declination scale. Then the arrow on the compass will be pointing toward true north.
