I'm also half chinese, but I spoke a lot of cantonese instead of mandarin when I was like 3-5 years old

I’m fluent in everyday Mandarin, but I struggle with corporate jargon and Chinese slang or idioms. Lately, I’ve started learning Chinese internet slang, it feels way more useful for connecting with younger people than the stiff, textbook style dialogues from apps like Duolingo.😊

She spoke it a few times, but it sounded like John Cena's Chinese

Same! I stopped speaking mandarin when I was 5 or 6. Born in Taipei, raised in the U.S.

My first language was Mandarin too, i'm not going to specify my age, but I am a minor, and Mandarin has slowly begun to fall out of use for me, I think that happens to most people growing up in a community where the use of their first language is scarce-none. It is truly sad...

As someone who isn't chinese that does speak Chinese. Yes, there are lots of Chinese people that can't speak Chinese. Im glad I have people in my friend group that I can speak Chinese with, if not, I would've not been able to speak it too. So if yall wanna practice, speak Chinese to someone

Half Chinese and wish my mom would have taught us Mandarin. She was fluent, but decided we didn't need it. It really would have been nice to know. As an adult my brain isn't wired to learn languages. It's really a struggle that I haven't been able to allocate time for.

Same thing happened to my little brother who was born in USA. Before kindergarten he always spoke Mandarin to my mom. As soon as he starts kindergarten, 100% English, he forgot all the Mandarin.

Language is a use it or loose it situation, can remember phrases but you loose a lot over time

My uncles first language was German. He was held back in the 1st grade because his teachers assumed he was mentally disabled. Grandma forbade German from being spoken in her house from that day forward. He was 6.

He's now in his 60s, and if you speak to him in German, he'll understand you, and answer in English, not even realizing you spoke German. My dad was 2 at the time, and he also understands, but can't speak it.

I'm Hispanic. Spanish was my first language. Then I learned English.

I still do speak Spanish. I speak both daily, between socializing outdoors and speaking with my parents. Glad I still speak my first language.
