The quality of the architecture, design, urban planning, transport infrastructure, etc. in the Netherlands have always been impressive to me. I'm hoping to visit within the next couple years.

Hi Local resident here. The Chesspiece Museum is indeed located in the middle of "Overblaak" But the houses are the "Cubehouses" so no they don't look like chesspieces it is just one of the cubes that happen to have a museum inside. "Overblaak" is the street on the upperfloor between the Cubehouses also known as "Blaakse Bos" (Blaak Forrest)

Congratulations on 100K subscribers Jeff !!!

Greetings from Florida. Been to Amsterdam but never been to Rotterdam. Seems like Rotterdam has a lot of unique & interesting buildings. That's great that lots of people walk, bike & take mass transit. Looks like a city with a great quality of life. Let us know if any of the cities/countries on your trip are your first time visiting. Thanks for another great video!

I lived in Rotterdam from 1974-1977. I can't get over how much has changed.

Hanoi is nuts we were there at the beginning of 2020. I’m heading back to Rotterdam April 2023, I left in 1974, so momentous. My 19 year old is there at the moment and says it’s her fav as well. Great report. Melatonin easy to get in North America not here in Australia sadly.

Kudos for explaining the etymology of Rotterdam and Amsterdam, the smaller rivers Rotte and Amstel. Btw the original dam in the Rotte was right in front of the Markthal. As Rotterdam is also my place of birth.
The ‘ij’ sound, like in Rijnhotel, Lijnbaan eo is pronounced as ‘ai’… more or less…

Why do people always go to the western part? I was born in the eastern part, lots to explore there too.

Rotterdam in your vid looks far too wide and low as it actually
Still very nice to follow your walks and commentary .

Question. Why is your channel named Island Hopper TV? You start your Rotterdam video with a view at my part of the city Noordereiland (Nortern Island). But then you don't cross the (Willemsbrug) red bridge to hop to an island in the middle of the river. Not a main tourist route but with a channel name like yours...

The reason why its modern I think is because the city burned down about a century ago and they rebuilt it with modern architecture.

The reason Rotterdam has so many modern buildings is because in world war 2 they fought back against the nazis in a kind of guerilla way. The Germans didn't bother much and just bombed the whole city. Amsterdam didn't fought and even helped the nazis find the jews.

That part of the video you filmed at the library, wonder why it's that empty? Well now they use it as a market place, but the Germans did bombed that whole strip and destroyed alot of houses.

I have been born and raised in Rotterdam ;)
