One of my favorite things about Face Value is how the songs are sequenced. I love how Roof is Leaking, Droned and Hand in Hand all connect. To me, it almost feels like it tells a story. In Roof is Leaking, Phil describes the dire situation, and tells the listener how the upcoming winter will be "another bad one", but at the same time spring will soon arrive and wash the winter away. To me Droned represents the winter, and all the hardships it brings upon the family from Roof is Leaking. But then in Hand in Hand, spring finally arrives, and the family celebrates.

The roof is leaking/Droned/Hand in hand is one of my favorite 3 track runs in all of music, so good.

I must have watched the live version from the but seriously tour 1000 times. The drums are amazing. When I found the live version on the everyday single (back before you could find any song on you tube) it was such a find!

Remember when you had to search through independent record stores to find a Cd single with a rare song you’d heard of. I used to have a cd single that had “on the shoreline.” I thought I’d died and gone to Heaven.

I love this channel. Here’s an idea for something obscure to discuss that only fans would know. I love the little oddities such as at the end of “sons of our fathers” when Phil puts his sticks down and you can hear “let’s have a listen”. I wonder why he left that on the final recording.

Also I love when his voice cracks occasionally and you hear the emotion. For instance listen to “I wish I could write a love song” on You Know what I Mean.

Also, you can hear his vocal distort on the 2nd verse of the b side “It’s Over.” That may be because it’s a demo.

One of my favorite moments is on the making of Face Value he starts to play Please Don’t Ask on the piano. But he has to stop because he’s overcome by sadness.

Yes love the instrumentals. How cool would that be to find another instrumental! Live in hope!

Yeah, I wish he made more of this kinda stuff, the drumming is sick at the end

A couple more PC instrumentals to throw into the conversation are Rad Dudeski from the Both Sides era and Around The World In 80 Presets from But Seriously era...both were B sides from singles rather than album tracks. Rad is a jazzy little number and Presets has more of the Phoenix Horns sound to it. I prefer Presets but like both because they're PC showing his drumming chops! Saw Hand In Hand on the DITL 97 tour in Birmingham, England...PC walked right past me on his way to the stage! Fantastic start to the gig, brilliant tune and his playing is majestic...this live version on the recent reissue of Face Value is my favourite.
Thanks for the post, always interesting to read!

kind of wish that he would have played hand-in-hand on his final farewell tour in 2004.

I would love to hear you do a song review on Find a Way to my Heart.
Its me and my pregnant SOs favorite track, we play it for our daughter whos due this summer and feel that the lyrics apply to us, even though it might have a different meaning to the artist. :)
