It was passed down for 1000 years, not thousands of years. Exactly how it started isn’t known and we only have legends and theories, but there can be no doubt it started at the imperial court. I believe one reason why it lasted so long was China being isolated from the world for so long. Once the Western influence entered China, attitudes began to shift and more organised efforts to stop the practice appeared as opposed to the sporadic ones of the past.
