Dave, I wanted to thank you so much for being clear, especially for someone like me, who started learning Photoshop when older, now at 61 I am still learning! Depth map is something I wanted to learn for my nature photographs, (usually taken with a 100-400 lens) but it's important for me to separate subject from background specially when it's small as a bird...The way you explain, is great. I saw 2 other people teaching, and it was sooo complicated that my brains gave overlow! LOL . Thank you again, best wishes from Uruguay.

I used to do it this way. But find the Depth Blur neural filter saves time and works my many shots where you have objects at different depths. Sometime I do the blur in the filter. But often I just use it to output a depth map so I can refine the depth map if needed.

Excellent tutorial thanks Dave. What about the fringing around the main elephant’s left leg? Is it possible to blur the outline slightly to hide it?

Very good Dave. I haven't seen this technique before. I looks very realistic. But I have a question: how did the lens blur filter pick up on the depth map that you created? I know you clicked on depth map in the filter but the depth map channel wasn't active nor highlighted.

Nice fallback if needed, but honestly, I'd be kicking myself for not doing it in-camera the entire time I was making the effect in post. 😅
