This guy has written hundreds of songs across several genre's. He is very intelligent as well. One of my favorites by him is, "Why Me Lord".

“I know this feeling.” That’s the secret to good country music, in four little words.

when Johnny Cash debuted this on his TV show the network executives said he couldn’t day stoned on the tv, someone said to say wishing lord I was home. Cash looked at Kris and Kris said that wasn’t what he was feeling when he wrote it.Cash never said what he was going to do and when he sang it looked up to the balcony where Kris was standing and emphasized the word stoned

Kris was a favorite of mine as a kid growing up.
Mom would often times find me singing a song or two of his.
At 60, I still enjoy his classics.

Some Old School suggestions:
50's: Johnny Cash "I Walk the Line"; Marty Robbins "El Paso"
60's: Patsy Cline "Crazy"; Loretta Lynn "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man"
70's: Waylon Jennings "Luckenbach, Texas": Kenny Rogers "The Gambler"
Thanks!

I heard this song in 1972 as a 13 year old teenager, and somehow knew he was singing about my future. I saw him in concert dozens of times (last time in 2021), met & talked to him a few times, and I am so grateful he left such a catalogue of inspirational music and an example of deep personal integrity and authenticity. His death has left such a void - sorta like a Sunday Morning Coming Down.

No one could write a song like this one, without having lived it...not had been in his shoes. This man is a US army Helicopters in Vietnam, is/was (May he rest in peace). Song writer, actor, Rhodes Scholar. He wasn''t talking about Marajuana when he said "Stoned", he meant drinking. What I like about Kris Kristofferson, not only writing, but the stoires and how they were written. You can see what he's singing or has wirtten, . Thank you.

Chris was a graduate of West Point, he was a Rhodes Scholar, Golden Glove Boxer, US Army Ranger and helicopter pilot. He left all that to pursue a career in songwriting and as a singer . He was a prolific songwriter, actor playing a leading role in A Star is Born with Barbara Streisand among other movies. He was also tight with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings . Check out the Highway men

Enjoying your venture into Country music and appreciate that you aren’t “writing off” a genre without experiencing it for yourself.

Suggestions:
“Crazy” – Patsy Cline
“Fancy” – Reba McEntire
“Funny How Time Slips Away” – Willie Nelson
“Go Rest High On That Mountain” – Vince Gill
“The Breath You Take” – George Strait
“Jolene” – Dolly Parton
“Me Neither” – Brad Paisley

You need to listen to this WITHOUT stopping. It's very emotional. A alcohols loneliness after a binger!...

More than "intelligent, " Kris was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford in England. His father was a high ranking military officer. At some point, Kris was a Golden Gloves boxer. He was offered a position as an English professor at West Point. How pleased his parents must have been until Kris refused the offer. Kris moved to Nashville and took a job as janitor in the recording studio at Columbia Records where Johnny Cash did his recordings. Johnny apparently didn't listen until Kris (a veteran) borrowed a helicopter and landed on the lawn at Johnny's lakeside home.

Johnny Cash does a fantastic Job of Kris' song as well. Hearing this in Johnny's voice brings a whole different experience to an amazing song, I recommend that version as well!

I've loved this song for decades, but I've never heard THIS recording of it before. Thank you!
And Yeah, you're going to need a couple more Country Lists.... Regular, Happy, Sad, and Comedy.
To start filling in the comedy, check out Ray Stevens: Mississippi Squirrel Revival, Shriner's Convention, Guitarzan, The Streak

When this song was written, Sunday was a family day for church, big meals, and family time. The majority of stores were closed, by law, same with bars and liquor stores. The streets were pretty much empty of pedestrians and cars because everyone was at home on Sundays. Therefore, Sunday was more empty and painful for people alone than the other days of the week.

The loss of his family is reflected in the words, caught the smell of someone frying chicken .( the sunday family meal, " Daddy swinging his daughter, " brought me back to something I lost along the way."..he lost his family to drugs and alcohol. His loss was felt more keenly and painful on Sunday.

Today's culture and society has lost out from the days when families mattered and the laws supported the family.

This is definitely more traditional & it's over 50 years old. Johnny Cash released it too & his version has a bit of a different vibe, but both are 'old country'. There is a mellowness about this song. We can all envision the story he is painting for us. Kris is a writer & written many hits for others. He was also in a group called the Highwaymen, consisting of him, Johnny, Willie & Waylon Jennings. They were all close friends. Now just him & Willie are left. He wrote & made a great version of Me & Bobby McGee. Highly recommend.

KK was an athlete and was actually mentioned in Sports Illistrated. He was an army Ranger and helicopter pilot, all before being a janitor in Johnny Cash's studio, where he was discovered as a songwriter.

When listening to Kris, its all about the WORDS. No one comes close to the emotions Kris makes you feel. Please don't poo-poo his talent. Another person to consider, is Merle Haggard, he was called the cowboy poet for a reason. I am going to really enjoy your exploration of country music. I'm old school, so I don't know much about the newer artists, so maybe I'll learn from you too!
