African cichlids (tilapias) are tough fish. I believe they can hold their ground with piranhas given a few fish in healthy mood.

I love piranhas, but so many owners get them just to satisfy some inherent need to see other fish and/or animals suffer and be devoured by them.
Cichlids are cool fish, too, and this shouldn't be done. That cichlid knows he's in trouble. =/
These fish can inhabit the same tank, if they are all introduced at the same time and when they are all young. If the tank has the required number of hiding spots, for all of the fish, and they are fed regularly ... then piranhas and cichlids can be kept together.
