How to Capture Audience Attention

I’ll be sharing more insights on how to practice being obsessive about your audience and capture their attention. Follow me on Instagram: @masteryourtalk

1. Practice talking to an audience that doesn’t exist (0:43).

When I did case competitions in university, most of the competitions I did never really had the actual company’s executives as judges. It was mostly faculty professors, company executives from the same industry, but not necessarily the company or simply random sponsors for the competition. Because of this, we had to pretend as if the CEO was in the room, even when he wasn’t, and we had to present to him anyways. This means, in real life, when your key audience is sitting in front of you, it becomes WAY easier to present to them and build rapport/connection with them. A great way to practice this is just present with a friend before your actual presentation. Since your friend won’t be in your actual audience, you can practice pretending she will be, so that it’ll better prepare you for the big leagues.

2. Talk directly to your audience by name (1:55).

I’ve always liked to compare public speaking with a coffee with a friend. In that regard, the connection that you feel when you have a coffee with an old friend is something that you can’t replace. To practice that type of feeling in presentations, I recommend that you address your audience directly. What does this mean exactly? This means, instead of saying Hi, my name is… blab la bla, say, good afternoon Ms. Veliz, that will constantly remind you that you’re talking to SOMEONE, ANOTHER HUMAN, rather than just this wide, empty sea/ocean. If this isn’t possible, then address the group at once, maybe it’s conference attendees, thanks for having me, your desire to learn and grow has brought you here.

3. Practice crazy things you would never present to grab your audience’s attention (3:21).

Here’s some examples. In one of my presentations, to show my class of students how far you can take presentations and being audience obsessed, I once did an introduction in Japanese (almost entirely). Why? Because the case was based in Japan and the CEO in the case was a native. He wasn’t sitting in the room, mind you, but my coach, who happened to speak Japanese was and he said it was great, even if everyone else laughed. But, the point is I think not being afraid to try new, creative ways to present will help you increase your confidence to do anything in presentations. There was this other instance, in a situation where I knew most of the audience personally, I was going to bring roses to the presentation for the SOLE reason that people would wonder why in the world, I brought roses and then I’d give them out at the end to keep the suspense and their attention.

I hope this video gave you an idea on how far I push the boundaries to get my audience to love me, even if you implement a bit of this information, I guarantee you’ll be able to connect with your audience in a way you never thought about doing in the past.

"My presentation doesn't begin when I speak, it begins the second I am in the room". very true

Wow Brenden, this video blew my mind! It reminded me of times when I watched my classmates competed in debate competitions back in high school. And how they addressed the audience with taking in account of the several folks in the crowd.

Thanks for this amazing tip! It’s definitely going to help me create my message clearer and speak more freely.
