Η προσευχή του Ψάλτη, The Chanter’s Prayer

Master Chanter Georgios Theodoridis and Holy Cross St. Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir, directed by Prof. Grammenos Karanos, performing “The Chanter’s Prayer” at the 4th Boston Byzantine Music Festival, hosted by the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art Culture at Hellenic College Holy Cross, November 11–12, 2016. “The Chanter’s Prayer” is a Psaltotragoudo (a song with scales and melodic motifs similar to those of ecclesiastical hymns) composed in 1991 by Vasileios Katsifis (1923–2015), a distinguished chanter, composer, and music teacher. It expresses the poet’s fervent prayer to become again a chanter in heaven and chant in eternity alongside the great chanters of the twentieth century.

Ἡ προσευχὴ τοῦ ψάλτη

Θεέ μου σὲ παρακαλῶ, ὅταν θὲ νὰ πεθάνω,
ἂς ξαναγίνω ψάλτης σου, στὸν κόσμο τὸν ἐπάνω.
Γιατὶ οἱ ψάλτες εἶν’ τ' ἀηδόνια ποὺ σὲ ὑμνολογοῦνε,
ἀπ’ τὴ γῆ τοὺς διάλεξες, νὰ σὲ δοξολογοῦνε.

Καὶ μέσα στὸν παράδεισο, στὴ σιγαλιά τὴ θεία,
μὲ πατριάρχες θά ’στηνα οὐράνια λειτουργία.
Τοὺς λαμπροὺς ἀπ' τὸ συνάφι θὰ συνάξω,
δυὸ χοροὺς μὲς στὸν παράδεισο, ὅπως στὴ γῆ θὰ φτιάξω.

Τὸν Ἰάκωβο Ναυπλιώτη θά ’χω Πρωτοψάλτη,
τὸν σεβάσμιο τὸν γέρο Πάντα κανονάρχη.
Καμπανίδη καὶ Μουτάογλου καὶ τὸν Πετρίδη,
θά’ βαζα νὰ βόηθαγαν τὸν γέρο στὸ στασίδι.

Στὸ ζερβὶ τὸ ἀναλόγι, Πρίγγο καὶ Δουκάκη,
καὶ τὸν μελιστάλαχτο τὸν Κανακάκη.
Δίπλα θά ’ναι ὁ Καραμάνης, ὁ Στανίτσας κὶ ὁ Βιγγάκης,
ὁ Σύρκας καὶ ὁ Χρύσανθος, ὁ Μῆτρος κὶ ὁ Σωκράτης.

Τὴν προσευχή μου ἂν ἄκουγες, ὢ πλάστη καὶ Θεέ,
οἱ ψάλτες δὲν θὰ πέθαιναν ποτέ!

My God, I beseech you, when I die,
let me once again be your Chanter in the world on high.
For the Chanters are the nightingales who praise you,
you chose them from on earth to always glorify you.

And in the midst of Paradise, in silence divine,
with patriarchs a celestial liturgy will I design.
From Chanters will I gather the best of all,
and two choirs in Paradise like on earth will I install.

I will have Iakovos Nafpliotis as my protopsaltis
and the venerable old Pantas as my kanonarchis.
At the chant stand Moutaoglou and Petrides
will help the old man, along with Kampanides.

At the left stand will be Pringos and Doukakis
along with the most mellifluous Kanakakis.
Next to them will be Karamanis, Stanitsas, and Vingakis,
Syrkas, Chrysanthos, Mitros, and Sokratis.

If, O Creator and God, you heard my prayer and my cry,
Chanters would surely never die!

Σε τέτοιες ερμηνείες δεν σχολιάζουμε. Κλείνουμε τα μάτια κι ακούμε με τα αισθητά αυτιά, αλλά και τα της ψυχής. Μυσταγωγία ουράνια. Εύχομαι Γιώργο και στον Παράδεισο να ψάλλεις. Και η δική σου ερμηνεία, αλλά και η συνολική απόδοση του τραγουδιού είναι από τις καλύτερες, για να μην πω η καλύτερη(ας αφήσω και το ενδεχόμενο αυτό). Χρήστος Σταύρου
