"Be polite to the staff" only works if the staff aren't lazy and rude.

I was stuck in a different country once, if you were nice, they wouldn't look at you, if you were rude, they also wouldn't look at you.
You had to be a combination of rude and polite for them to not pretend they didn't hear you. The combination had to be perfectly balanced, timed right and directed at the right person. It was exhausting.

Being polite works most of the time, but unfortunately not all the time :( ....

My family and I were traveling from Moscow to Toronto. We missed our connecting flight because of delays and had to line up to get reissued new boarding passes. The airline provided as much as you wanted snacks to everyone waiting for boarding passes. It was a good day, shoutout to Lufthansa!

Direct observation of a passenger who got stuck at Chicago's O-hare airport: ALL flights grounded by a big freezing blizzard. (By the way, the ticket agents do NOT create the weather!) Angry mobs of passengers were jammed into the seating area, shouting at the ticket agents, and shoving one another like it was a Black Friday sale at a tech shop. The airline called in every possible ticket agent and supervisor to help out. The poor ticket agents were trying desperately to shift ALL the passengers from all the day's cancelled flights onto the next available flights. Some passengers would have to spend the night in a hotel, and by then, I swear: EVERY hotel in all of Chicago had been completely booked, by all the airlines putting up passengers.
One passenger skipped the cue and camped out in the seating area until the tidal wave mob abated. Some time later, a ticket agent came over to her, (yes, you read that right) just to let her know that she had noticed her, and was still working on the situation. The ticket agent's voice was raspy and she could barely speak above a whisper.
The passenger left the area. She returned a few moments later with a huge cup of hot tea with honey and lemon.
Guess who was the very first passenger on the very next flight out?!

This happened to me a few months ago on an intercontinental flight. i did exactly what you say now and arrived in Bangkok only 5-6 hours late and paid nothing extra. At the help desk was a compatriot of mine. Lucky me! It really worked.

Only issue I've had with flights previously is when I went to Greece last March... we checked in everything and it all went smoothly. When we land, we go to my aunt's place (Biologically I'm half Greek) after realising that half the flight's passengers luggage got left behind at the departing airport! We waited THREE DAYS for our suitcases to come back to us (spent three days in the same clothes)... took one day to fly the luggage over and two full days to take them to where we were staying as the flight company sent them to us all by taxi...

This was very informative. My absolute worse fear about flying is missing my flight. Now I feel a bit at ease (I'll still try to be on time, of course).

I spent the 1980's and 90's globe hopping (I've only flown once since 9/11). Anyway, never missed a flight, but there used to be a primitive airport in Denver (which was replaced) that was also a hub. During winter, there were so many flight screw ups because of this airport. One time, because of cancelled flights, I'm in Phoenix looking at a bad situation because the plane I need is grounded in Denver. The gate agent tells me (and another man) that there is one seat on one plane available and whoever gets to the other side of the airport first, will get the flight. The man looks at me and takes off running. He's in his late 20's and looks to be in good shape, but I'm in my early 20's and a US Marine in excellent physical condition. Even with my 50 pound seabag, I still left him in the dust and got that seat.

Being polite sometimes has its pros and cons depending on the passenger approaches the gate keeper or booking agent. I haven't flown in years so this is just my opinion

I missed my flight because someone fell off the Amtrak train I was travelling on. The nice people at American Airlines bumped my up to a later flight on British Airways. They have a better class of blanket. 😁😁

Me who knew this stuff, but enjoyed the way she explained it; and I hope it helps people that seriously need it. Given I’ve been stand by many times, I’d really appreciate it when I see them running to the gate that was supposed to get their seat; and didn’t for xyz reasons.

I had issues with missing connection because of weather. The first time, American rebooked my connection, and it was so late that I would have missed my connection. The connection ended up getting delayed too, but the computer didn’t know that at the time. Anyway, the connection I was rebooked onto was really late and would make me miss the event I was traveling for. The gate agents worked their magic and got me back onto the original delayed connection. The second time, weather again, I fully missed the connection, but the agents on the phone got me rebooked when the app couldn’t

Luggage- I flew home to Canada from the US during the SARS epidemic in 03. I tried to go through security! Honest! I got met at the gate by a huge linebacker of a woman who would have scared Trunchbull. WHERE YOU FROM GIRL!! I told her..and got kicked OUT of security into the main airport! My luggage, however, stayed in security, unclaimed by me because I wasn't allowed to go get it. I had to line up in the main area and go through security like a new passenger EVEN THOUGH my freaking ticket said Norfolk to Dulles, Dulles to Toronto, Toronto to Halifax. The freaking security and gate agents didn't bat an eye! I got home. My luggage didn't. No no, it got flagged as abandoned and suspicious and searched within an inch of its life! Finally got it back 3 days after I got home. 😂
