JMM 2020: Kenneth A. Ribet, University of California, Berkeley, gives the AMS Retiring Presidential Address on "A 2020 View of Fermat's Last Theorem." This lecture was given on January 16, 2020 at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Denver, CO.

I am just a popular maths fan and have an interest in Fermat. I understood maybe 5% of Kenneth Ribet’s lecture but I found the whole thing engrossing and fascinating. His ability to keep people like me interested when most of it is incomprehensible is a massive credit to his knowledge and presentation skills. I have never heard someone speak with such clarity and fluidity. Thank you.

Ken Ribet deserves far more accolade for the proof of the Fermat’s Last Theorem than he has been given credit for. His proof of the ε-conjecture (originally proposed by Jean-Pierre Serre), and now known as Ribet’s theorem, is not only an indispensable bridge to the final proof, but has so far proven to be the only path. Not to take anything away from Andrew Wiles’ brilliant work, or Ribet’s fundamental contributions, but I believe the proof of the Fermat’s Last Theorem should really be regarded as a true collaborative effort also involving others like Barry Mazur (Torsion theorem, Galois deformations, as well as other insights and suggestions), Nick Katz (for having aptly identified the insurmountable problem in Wiles’ original approach), and Richard Taylor (for having helped Wiles construct the final correct approach).

Thanks for an extremely efficient delivery. The principles of the different elements relevant to the proof, and how they connect, are for the first time clear to me, both part by part, and as a whole. And that is quite significant, and says a lot about the lucidity of the speech. 4×23 is of course not 96. But when explained as 4×23, then 92 is readily deduced.
