I just read “Turn of the Screw” published in 1898, which was, apparently, the basis for this movie. The book was a bit of a difficult read because of the flowery English of the day, but I enjoyed it. Now I’ll have to watch the movie!

I’m sure David lynch took in this nightmare as a precocious teen in the early 60s and it fostered much of the territory he worked for decades. Much of the credit to Freddie Francis, who went on to shoot for Lynch and does more here with wide scope black and white than any other director thought to do. And it fits, the scope illustrates the endless hallways and rooms of this place for haunted souls. I wonder if Kubrick had it as a reference for the overlook. But, as much as I love the Shining, The Innocents is the true article and rarity, a British period piece crossed with a horror film addressing unspoken topics which the writer and director only glancingly referenced. The objective here, as in The Shining was to capture “The Cold” to have the setting and the themes at play be responsible for all the chills the movie has at its core. And it benefits rewatches more than most films. There’s always more to be gleaned by simple staging and dynamics between Kerr and the children actors
