Having outfits as separate character slots instead of being a sub menu is the most incomprehensible choice I could possibly imagine
Unless these outfits have different stats, there's no need for them to be individual slots on the character select screen.
Just hit a different button while highlighting the character and pick from a list of outfits. Simple.
