Synthetic Intelligence Forum is excited to convene a session about "AI in Earth Observation" with Anders Knudby, PhD (Associate Professor of Geography, Environment, and Geomatics, University of Ottawa).
Topic:Earth Observation technology, the imaging of Earth from orbiting satellites, is producing a rapidly growing stream of data about our world. Artificial Intelligence, specifically machine learning algorithms, is required to process this data and extract actionable information from it. In this talk, using examples from research done at the University of Ottawa’s Shallow Water Earth Observation Lab, Dr. Anders Knudby will outline recent developments in two domains that are both crucial to this conversion of a constant stream of satellite imagery from a firehose of data to a wealth of information and knowledge about Earth.
The first is cloud-based satellite image processing platforms, that allow users to access and process the data where they are, on server farms, and only download the results of their image analyses. The second is the machine learning algorithms that are used to map and monitor objects in the imagery. Both technologies are still in their infancy, but point toward a future in which AI significantly boosts humanity’s ability to extract information and knowledge from Earth Observation data.
Biography: Professor Anders Knudby has conducted research in the application of AI technology in Earth Observation for over 25 years, published close to 100 scientific articles and delivered talks and workshops around the world.
Since arriving at the University of Ottawa in 2015, he has directed the Shallow Water Earth Observation Lab, conducting and supervising research on application of machine learning models for mapping and monitoring a wide range of environmental variables observable in satellite imagery, with a focus on the aquatic environment.
He received his PhD in Geography from the University of Waterloo, an MSc in Geography from the University of Copenhagen, and a BSc in Geoinformatics from the University of Copenhagen.
