Since the background is white is it not possible to use pen tool to select according to color??

Great video! I designed something similar but I'd like to connect the parts with a very thin line at the edges. How do do that? Simple anchor point connecting doesn't work because they are closed paths. I've been searching for hours but I can't find solution.
