For non-portuguese speakers, this song tells the story of a friendship between two boys, one black and one white, who grow up on a fazenda in the Brazilian backcountry. They come from different social classes - one is the child of the fazenda owner, the other the child of a worker (possibly an enslaved worker) - but nevertheless they have a deep friendship, fishing together and enjoying the natural beauty of the fazenda landscape - "just being able to sit on the hill and see everything green, beautiful, growing".

Then one day, the white child leaves to go off to the city to study, and the two say goodbye at the train station. "Don't forget, friend, I'll be back". He returns years later with a wife and a fancy degree, but he has changed - "now on the fazenda, he's the one who gives the orders". The last line is: "And his old friend doesn't play any more, he only works."
