Camera settings for street photography & tips!

Ok so i'm finally getting round to this video.. its my number one requested video so i hope you like it and find it useful.

Although i shoot my street photography with either a Fujifilm XT3, X100F or XPro2, these camera settings are universal and can be implemented to any camera.
Mirrorless cameras are amazing and offer a ton of cool features but DSLR's are still perfect for street photography so don't feel you need to upgrade..

Ive been shooting street photography and filming my adventures for a while now. Over that time my style of shooting and the way i set my cameras up have changed. Now i feel i'm happy with my cameras and the way i shoot so i feel confident sharing these camera settings with you.

Please bare in mind, these are just my preferences, there are many amazing street photographers shooting with completely different camera settings

I hope you found this video useful :-)

Great video, Gareth. I’ve set the front button to autoexposure lock, and it works really well especially if you have one or more setting on auto in the exposure triangle. 1. Back button focus the subject. 2. Move the camera around the subject to find the desired exposure and hold with your middle finger. 3. Recompose and shoot.

Front button I use to focus-on, find it more comfortable for my hands. Especially when I am flipping the screen up and shooting from my waist etc. Front button focusing ftw!

I shoot the XT1 and X100T mainly. Great info for those learning to get to grips and customising their cameras. I went Fujifilm because it was the best system for both landscape and street, for me anyway. It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up a Canon. I also shoot Sony A6300’s but there’s just something about those Fujifilm files and the ergonomics of these great little cameras.

Interesting video. I’d love to get into street photography but feel conspicuous with my dslr, it’s pretty large and obvious! I had an M50 and traded it for a 90d, regretted trading it ever since and so contemplating a smaller, less obvious mirrorless but ££😳 I’m so used to canons menus being straightforward I’m not sure if I’d get confused with someone else’s 😂 really enjoying all your videos and something new to learn, thanks for the content.

I use the button on the front (that you use for image preview) for toggling between 2 and 10 second timer. It's been great for me! Great video!

Belting video Gareth. Great balance between getting the information across, without going all technical. The tip on natural live view is really useful.

The information and presentation was excellent, covered all the essentials. I have not done much street photography, but I think I generally follow what you suggested except for making my camera completely silent, including the light. Never considered that but will do that from now on, probably set up a program mode for it. Happy that you emphasized the backbitten focus. Always surprised how many photographers will not do that. Thanks for sharing.

I started using back button focusing after watching one of your videos quite a few months ago, love it.

Great video. I just change form XT2 to XT3 two days ago. I was shooting on AP, C, and Auto ISO but your arguments have convinced me and I'm going to try everything on manual. Thanks

I use the front function button on the XT-2 to bring up the histogram graphs (red, green, blue and luminosity), they are much bigger and you can easily toggle them on or off to check that you are not clipping anything.

Those are wonderful shots Gareth 👏 🙌 🙏...Hello Gareth I'm from India and professionally a Pharmacologist but I'm in love with Streetphotography n for that I have bought a FUJIFILM XT30 II with XC15-45mm F3.5-5.6 kit lens yesterday.... should I go on with it initially ? Or should I go for a Prime Lens ? Which one would be ideal for Streetphotography and daily shooting purpose ? I'm having very little knowledge about Lenses so I badly need your guidance 🙏

I use the front function button as my auto focus button, operated with my middle finger. Much more comfortable for me (X-H1, large hands)

I have an X100T, X-T20 and X-T2. What is nice about the X100T, is it has a sound "kill switch." The 'Silent Mode' option. I'm surprised Fuji did not add this simple yet useful option in the other models. Oh welly well, I do as you do, and manually shut off all the sounds.

Have a try at setting the exp comp dial to C. Then assign the exp comp to the front command wheel. It will give to +/- 5 stops now instead of 3. It is easy to adjust on the fly, as you already have fingers around the shutter button. It maybe more intuitive than adjusting ISO.
