Snap is making… a drone? 🚁

Snap, the maker of Snapchat, is releasing its first self-flying drone called Pixy. At $229, it's the lightest and easiest-to-use drone we've tried. Just don't expect cinematic footage.

The main issue with something like this catching on is the balance between price and pixels. At $299.99 while it is relatively inexpensive, I don’t think the average person will want to buy it. And those who may want to take pictures with it (ie influencers) won’t make it their day-to-day because its resolution is too low.

The tech needs time to be more cost effective

Would be be a massive hit if it was closer to the 100 - 150 dollar range: 300 feels like a bit of a stretch.

It’s a weird price point for me… if it was sub-$200 I would probably just buy it for the novelty despite not using Snapchat. But as it stands, the DJI Mini SE is just $30 more and it’s tough to recommend the Pixy over that one.

But, one note to Verge reviewers; I don't feel you need to apologize multiple times for a hardware product not being a barn burner/ubiquitous/must have. The U.S. can comfortably support niche products. "If you like this sort of thing, you will like this thing" is a perfectly useful position to take.

The camera quality compared to any other consumer drone (like the Mavic Mini 2 specifically) is too poor for the price point. I could imagine like.. 80$ for a toy like this being appropriate as a launch price. The current price point is silly though

Snapchat to me is about being authentic and spontaneous - this drone feels way more like a tool for elaborate orchestration, aka a tool for Instagram and YouTube.
For the latter though the quality seems not quite up to par.
