Years ago I was a weight lifter alone. A good workout indeed.  Then I decided to get more ripped than bulked and so turned to running as well.  THEN, as running can become a "high" and somewhat addictive I left out the weight training or calisthenics.  Suddenly After a time I experienced what You've pointed out.  PLUS, my stride suffered and got more tired if you will.  SO, then I went back to weights and running and found my run was IMPROVED by weight training as was the calorie burn and got in really great shape.  It was a lesson indeed.  Cross training is what I advise to anyone but it's hard to get some to see the value in weight training at all! And the excuses are totally inane such as feeling they will bulk up too much. Sigh, teaching others isn't terribly easy!
