Douglas Jones, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, told DW’s Bureau Chief Ines Pohl in an interview that the cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners will be a significant focus of the summit. NATO aims to address the common challenges faced by its partners around the world, including those in the Indo-Pacific region. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine was highlighted as a direct threat to alliance security, with support from China and North Korea impacting security in both Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

Regarding Ukraine's aspirations for NATO membership, Jones stated that the summit will send a strong signal of support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Concrete decisions will be made to provide assistance and accelerate Ukraine's reform progress, ultimately paving the way for its eventual membership into the Alliance.

Jones acknowledged that Russia poses the most significant and direct threat to allied security, and NATO has taken steps to address this. The Alliance has increased its deterrence and defense capabilities, with more allies meeting their commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defense.

Finally, there were concerns about the potential re-election of Donald Trump and the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO. Jones refrained from commenting on politics but emphasized that NATO is stronger, more united, and more important than ever before for Euro-Atlantic security.

Aren't many of the issues in Ukraine a direct link to the actions of NATO, the EU, and the US? As well as Russia?

if you do believe Ugrian would become NATO in my view, I think it would look like Shara desert while Zelensky would also flee to other country for citizenship

Oh I thought Europe said Indo-Pacific didn’t matter. Mr Macron said he doesn’t want to be a follower. Seems like Europe finally understands they don’t lead they follow. If you want us to keep babysitting step up. We care about Asia more now.

We have a saying that goes, if you knock someone's door 1 day someone will knock on your door. Eu should also strengthen themselves with their own people. Myself I'm a foreigner living in swiss. Beauty of this country is they are neutral. So if ever something would happen. I know the other side is looking for it. Gladly we would defend this country defending our homeland. Alot of europe countries are involved. so they should know it brings consequences. If it would be in many ways. Let's hope it will never come to a war. But it's better to be prepared.

Russia's GDP forecast for 2024 is +3.2% .... Germany's GDP forecast is +0.2%.
Russia's latest manufacturing PMI is 54.9 (expanding) ... while Germany's is 43.5 (contracting).
I guess Henry Kissinger was right about being a "friend of the US".

Lets try and remember that NATO s a defensive organization.
Lets try and remember that If Hawaii or Guam are attacked NATO will do nothing to help the US.
Lets try and remember that if any European country wants to enter the Russo-Ukraine War, its not NATO business.
As for NATO in the Indo Pacific good; just get some formal treaty that the countries of the Indo Pacific will come to NATO countries in time of war. Good luck with that.
