Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides was first published in 2002. I read it then and absolutely loved it. The book is being reissued in 2013. If you missed it the first time you should read it now.
It is a family saga spanning three generations of a Greek family who emigrate to the USA. A daughter of the third generation is discovered to be different from the other girls. A defective gene is discovered to be the reason and this causes the family secrets to unravel.
This book will compel you from the first page until the last. You won't be able to put it down.
