A _really_ important detail you forgot:
The Flames of Disaster were a highly important plot point in the infamous Sonic '06, referring to a monster known as Iblis sealed inside of the character Princess Elise.
The fact that the show so brazenly referenced something as heavy as _that_ for the purposes of a bit is probably a huge contributing factor to why it took off in the first place; when heard out of context by someone who's familiar with '06 but not so much with the Knuckles series, it creates serious whiplash.

Fun fact: As shown in the last meme in the video, the name "Flames of Disaster" originated from the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) game, which was title that refers to Iblis. In the Knuckles show, the name was then given to a flame-like power that Knuckles had as a "the power within you" kind of thing, which he gained while fighting an Iblis-looking monster shown in the "low budget rock opera" retelling of his backstory, which was shown to the show's protagonist, Wade Whipple (Yep, Knuckles is not the main character. Just the secondary one).

I guess he forgot to mention that the only reason it became a meme was because "the flames of disaster" was already a completely different thing in the Sonic series since 2006

It’s still funny to me that this is technically a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, the flames of disaster initially being a sort of fancy term for one of the games villains, Iblis. In fact, Iblis himself appears in the Knuckles show during the puppetry musical segment in episode 4, being the monster Knuckles fought. It’s likely not exactly Iblis but it’s definitely the reference they likely were after here
