This character is just one big animation flex

I’ve heard this character criticized for being a little too simplistic, perhaps because she lacks a more vulnerable side, but I think she managed to do what many villains fail to do, which is set a proper tone/mood. She’s villainess, she’s dangerous, but she’s subtle. Subtlety is/can be scary.

Eris is by far one of DreamWorks Animation's most underrated villains. She bore no grudge against anybody, had no plot for conquest - she's just doing what she was born to do as the Goddess of Discord. She kept Sinbad and his crew on their toes with her monsters, and is such a seductive and master manipulator who nearly sent Syracuse down the road to collapse and anarchy... and all purely for her own entertainment.

Her "No mortal has ever made it to Tartarus before, alive that is" line is actually rather clever and shows understanding of mythology beyond surface level stuff. In Greek Mythology, Tartarus is one of several realms within the Underworld and the one in which oathbreakers, sinners and otherwise unsavory types are punished for their transgressions in life for all eternity. It also makes sense for Eris to reside there as she is a daughter of Nyx (primordial embodiment of the night) and granddaughter of Chaos itself (Primordial entity from which everything originated) which makes her a Chthonic goddess (a god with ties to the underworld) which does fits her dark, aetherial appearance and smoky movements

Half this movie's budget went into this woman's hair. No one can convince me otherwise.
