- The answer depends on the company and position you’re applying to but in general, the most important (and most overlooked) transferable skill is your product and market knowledge - especially your ability to understand communicate your product and market knowledge. - The instruments in your lab, or the reagents, or the engineering software you use, or the course materials, or even the chair you’re sitting in right now - these were all made by a company - a company that would love to hire someone who has experience using their product and their competitor’s products.

- Stop ignoring and/or avoiding the sales specialists and application scientists and customer service reps that visit your lab, your workspace, your office, etc. These people are great contacts to have for informational interviews and job referrals.
