Madan, The story is partially correct. The actual story is as follows. After Gandhari's curse and after few years Krishna had a son called Samba. He was very naughty and mischievous. Once he and is friends made a prank on few sages who had come to Dwarka. The prank was that Samba was dressed like a pregnant lady and went to these sages along with his friends. He asked the sages to tell if he would giving birth to a girl or boy baby. Sages with their powers were able to know that this is a prank and they immediately cursed Samba to give birth to a cylindrical metal object/pole. Samba immediately gave birth to this metallic object. Samba and his friends immediately went to Lord Krishna and Balarama and explained the situation. Krishna then suggested to grind this metallic object and drop it in ocean as this will lead to the destruction of entire Dwarka. The people followed the instructions from Krishna. But after dropping this powdered metal in ocean, the metallic powder grew into sharp sticks/arrow like objects. Also the mail metallic pole which was shrunk dew to grinding was thrown in seashore which was later picked by a hunter who was once Vaali in Ramayana. Now as days passed people of Dwarka became very partying people consuming lots of alcohol and have multiple relationships. Due to this there were of clashes among people. Once a fight broke for such silly reasons and all dwarka people fought among each other and killed themselves. Balaramaji looking at this left to ocean depths to become adhisesha awaiting Vishnu. Krishna the went to forestto relax. While relaxing he was shaking the thumb finger of left leg which appeared as an animal / deer to the hunter who had collected metal from seashore. He had converted that metal into arrow. He used the same arrow and shor the left thumb of Krishna's leg. When he found what he had shot the hunter was surprised and shocked to have shot lord krishna. But Krishna explained him that he had killed the hunter in tretayug when this hunter was Vaali. So now the hunter has got the chance to take revenge similarly. Then Krishna left to his abode thereby keeping up with the curse of Gandhari.

Moreover, Krishna accepted Gandhari's curse like a mother's curse on the loss of her sons.. This is also to show that God accepts everything that we offer may be a flower, leaf or, even a curse. God sees the truthfulness in the feeling when we offer and not what we offer. This is what is my perspective.
