My all time favorite stack is the cheap comically thin steel 13 or 14" hi hats that came with my entry level kit. They are so thin that they dented all over from playing but of course I play heavy. They are one on top of another the same way with a thin felt between and tightened to taste. They bite super well, compliment my cracked China (it was broken before I got it) and they decay perfectly. Not super dry but they don't hang around and you would not believe they were the cheapest possible cymbals if you didn't see them. The 16" crash ride was used on top of said broken China as well. If you have these laying around do not throw them out, stack them.

I've been using stacked cymbals for close to 30 years now. My first stack was around 1995 or so, when I put a 12" Paiste 502 splash inside of a 16" Alpha china. Bozzio was my favorite drummer at the time and his use of stacks is still my favorite. Most drummers these days seem to have mostly smaller ones, but the larger ones (for a while I used a 16" china on top of a 20" power ride) are fantastic

I have two store brand splashs (10/12 inch), a broken 16" heavy crash with a broken 18" trash crash, and a broken 14" China which I screwed maximally tight on the stand for minimal sustain. Together with the other cymbals, I have an entire spectrum of sound and sustain combinations and I love the sound and versatility, and what it did to my creativity.

I made my first stack three years ago with an old cracked $60 meinl China, an old zildjian zbt ride, topped with a cracked zildjian a crash. It’s nice and trashy with a bit of sustain. Love it and after seeing this video I now want a lot with just stacks 😅

Great episode. I was frustrated for longer than I care to admit that I couldn't create a good stack. It is a trial and error thing. I now have several options I like, but something about the process getting there was harder than I expected. The internet wasn't very helpful either in terms of what combinations work, do you need a special cymbal stand or attachment, how do you prevent damaging the cymbals, etc. On top of that, you need to be able to try many cymbals which can get tedious, expensive, and time consuming (buying and selling).

I really dig this guy's approach. Awesome playing. Tight, crisp, and on point while still being organic. 🤘😝🤘

"Tang the hump" LOL! And yet, a useful concept. Thanks guys, always a laugh as well as good drum ideas.

I find that the cheaper entry level B8 Bronze Cymbals make great stacks cause the cymbals are a little "trashier" sounding that good B20 Bronze.

I use the old Sabian Assault Hats from the cymbal vote series (12” lampshade for the top, 14” holy china for the bottom, B8 for both), but with the lampshade flipped over and underneath the china. I use it as a sort of blend between a clap stack and a regular stack/aux hat. It’s all about finding unique ways to use cymbals you’ve got, including those unique cymbals that don’t get much love.

I bought a 10" splash ($10) and an 8" splash ($5), both Agazarian. Stacked together, they produce a clapping sound. I had a veteran musician play my kit and his favorite was that $15 stack, not my $$$ cymbals.

Awesomeness! We all need stacks on stacks on stacks!

I think we all need at least two stacks per kit

I remember first seeing a stack when i got into Hella, drummer Zach Hill has used one from at least 2000 comprising of 3 - 5 old or broken cymbals mounted bottom up facing towards him. I have never seen or heard anything close. Each studio album and tour seems to be a different recipe of cymbals and each sound is his signature stack sound and crazy unique.

I have one stacked cymbal. It creates this cool messy China boy sound. It’s really cool.

I used to have way too many cymbals, and when I reconfigured my kit, I decided to make my cymbal setup mirrored (similar, complimentary sound on the left and right.) So, where I have a ride on my right, I mirror it with a stack "ride" on my left. It's a 16" Zildjian A. Custom EFX with 11" K. Custom Hybrid Splash. Likewise, my 20" Oriental Crash of Doom is mirrored with a 17" A. Custom Crash and 11" K. Custom Hybrid Splash. Finally, my main hi-hats are mirrored on the right with 10"/12" Zildjian Oriental Trash Hats.
