Space: 1999 - Do We Really Need the RPG?

Do you recall the TV series Space: 1999? It lasted two seasons in the mid-70s as the moon floated through space and our crew had wacky adventures. Is this an IP you want to see brought into the RPG sphere?

YES!! YES!!!! Been waiting since 1978. Have owned over 41 complete RPG systems.

I am a 59 years old 43 year gamer. I am down to BECMI, 3.5 and 5.0 (for my wife) and Star Frontiers.

I have sold off 37 complete game systems. Within ONE minute I signed up for notifications and updates. The game cannot be out soon enough!! Only almost fifty years late.

Going to be amazing.

It's a show I remember fondly growing up. Our family would watch it every week. I didn't realize I wanted it until I saw this. I've had the DVD set for years and enjoy it every year.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!! Bought another set of both years of the show on DVD Blue Ray.

I had the three foot eagle from Mattel. I had multiple eagles from Dinky toys. I built plastic model eagles. I built the plastic model of the eagle and the mark IX hawk. I have all 14 comic books, I still have the moonbase alpha 3 ring binder technical notebook I got from Starlog magazine.

This is the ONLY new game I have ANY interest in. It it were $400 right here is money where is the rules.

I Love the Modiphus company.

Now they need to do the TV show "UFO" also by Gerry Anderson.

In the US to original debut year was 1975-1976. Season One
1976-1977 Season Two

I watched it on be black and white no remote set when it was brand new.

"UFO" was released in the late 1960s, 1968? A masterpiece. So loved it! It so needs an RPG so easy a secret military fighting flying saucer and aliens. Get a game for this NOW!!

You SHOULD get on YouTube and watch all of these great shows. All for free any time. I have watch both of these shows in the last seven days.

Watch these series.

Get the RPG

Yes they could release a system neutral information book or a setting for another system but generally rulebook sell better than either. The concept of a wandering moon travelling to different locations might be a fun Modiphius is UK based they will be local to their biggest market.

I also have the DVDs. I'm not clamoring for the RPG even though I like the show (series 1 mostly).

Seems to be a niche RPG, much like Alien and Blade Runner but those have more interest then there would be for Space 1999. So I agree with the question you pose.

I wondered whether there was such a system for Space: 1999 a while back, and it looks like - there is now! This seems aimed at Space: 1999 fans, not TTRPG fans. So, it's an RPG for fans of the show...not a game for gamers, or at least that's how it appears marketed.

I own the DVD box set - I bought it on the cheap - because I wanted to give the show a second look after so many decades. As you said, the first and second seasons are totally different. (Where did all these new cast members come from in season 2??? 🤣) The premise is, of course, ridiculous. But, the effects were sometimes passable, and the eagles are cool. As for the RPG, yeah, I'm not seeing the demand being high, but hey. Maybe they'll only make 500 of them and then in 30 more years when it becomes a cult classic with the next generation we can resell them for a fortune. 😂

It will sell well to a very Niche audience. The problem is longevity of the game. There is a core fanbase it will appeal to. However long term upkeep of the game might be an issue.

The show is very monster/problem of the week so it does suit a weekly adventure format.

I had the ship as a kid, and liked the show, but was more of a Battlestar Galactica fan.

Take my money!

Watched it in syndication. Also the DVDs and streaming (Shout?). Basically Mystery of the Week / Monster of the Week. Kinda like Star Trek. Am sure my group will find a refreshing change of pace from hack and slash / Call of Cthulu mind-destroying horror 🤓

💯on board. I just hope it’s good. I remember watching as a kid. Next up: BSG?

Let me see Sci fi properties that might be interesting as an RPG that have not received the RPG treatment as far as I know: Logans Run, V (1980s version), Max Headroom, Alien Nation, Robocop, Terra Nova, Earth 2, Jason of Star Command/Space Academy - however most of these are probably easier to run with a basic adaptable rule system for one campaign or a one shot convention game.

This would have been popular in the 1980's.
