A rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) is now being used by an Oxfordshire-based company for its superconducting properties in the hope it will make nuclear fusion a practical reality as Sky's Tom Clarke explains.

When I was an engineering student back in the 1970s, fusion was just a couple of decades away.

Man we have been watching levitating cold magnets for 50yrs.
This segment is hilarious.
For 1000th time they are explaining to us how fusion works.
Just around the corner
Just another 2 billion

Ah, fusion. The Holy Grail of energy production that always seems to be ten years away.

from last 70 years they are saying fusion is just 10 years away

I've learned so much from all the scientists in the comment section.

If I got a penny for every news item on promising new energy inventions, I'd get enough to pay my heating bill.

OH WOW !!! remember 20 yrs ago when graphene was found & it was going to take over the world ! ?

Who else is old enough to remember when scientists on Tomorrows World were promising so much electricity from nuclear power plant generation that it would be so cheap they probably wouldn't even bother to meter consumption? 😂😂😂

I feel like the smarter we get the dumber we get at the same time.

Its getting actually scary we hold all the solutions and refuse to implement them while spending equal resources and time it'd take to implement the solutions chasing impossible dreams.

Look at the natural order we are practically gods and we act and behave worse then starving pigs.

Our limits are psychological.

I can just imagine what your monthly fusion bill will be like.

PLEASE UK Govt .PLEASE dont let yet another British technical/ scientific jump ahead go to waste like TSR2, fuel cell, space race etc etc etc

wow, tomorrow's world from 30 years ago featured this.

If the greed didn’t exist energy would have been free of charge for whole country. By this I mean rich countries with the intention of being nice to their people would make energy free. For example don’t use gas. Turn everything into electricity and give it to people for free. It is possible but once greed is vanished from people.

Just learned it's secondary advantage in the show was that teleportation could still be used while it was active unlike deflector shields which is neat to me

I always get really excited about news like this. There are a few science channels I follow that always amp up the sarcasm to sublime levels whenever someone mentions controlled fusion.

it will provide near limitless energy... just need to invest limitless money and expend limitless energy to get it.

Sunk cost fallacy, we could just harness the fusion power from the sun with current technology for less cost than fusion research and subsequent plant construction/running. The easiest fusion is also radioactive so just use fission if nuclear is your thing.

If that disc of barium copper oxide has a magnetic field 1, 000, 000 times stronger than Earth's, why weren't we all instantaneously sucked into it?

Even if there was limitless energy, our government would still allow it to be taxed into oblivion and charged at an utterly ridiculous price
