In Memory of Eydie who died 10 August, 2013

Steve Lawrence ~

'Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years,' he said. 'I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing.

'While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time.'

An overlooked song by one of the all time great singers! Song says so much about life, relationships & lost loves.
Eydie Gorme was a blessing to any song she sang.

I enjoy the talent of many fine singers, but Eydie is my absolute favourite. She just has that mysterious quality that can be found no where else....something that I'm unable to capture in words. RIP...our singing angel from the Bronx

I can still remember Eydie singing this on the United Cerebral Palsy Telethon. Steve & Eydie were devoted supporters for this cause, along with Paul Anka. Anyone remember the guy from the labor unions (Jack Hausman?) who would say, "Send in the potatoes?"

As usual, Eydie knocks it out of the park with her version.

I'd never heard of this song until I came across two YouTube videos of Liza Minnelli singing it -- one in the 1972 TV special Liza with a Z, and another (also live) in some concert several years later. Minnelli's version is so powerful that I wanted to see how other singers do it, and all I've found so far are this studio recording by Eydie Gormé and a live performance by Ann Miller, of all people, on a Merv Griffin TV show in 1980. It's amazing how different the same song can be.

Ann Miller's version is how I imagine Ethel Merman would have sung it -- belted at full volume all the way though, without any hint of subtlety or sensitivity, and with no sense that the words have any meaning at all. She could just as well have been singing the phone book.

This one by Eydie Gormé at least shows some sensitivity, although she also maintains a steady emotional keel all the way through -- so only by carefully listening to the words does the hearer get any idea how emotionally wrenching this song is. Just listening casually, without paying special attention to the words, this Gormé recording sounds like an extended commercial jingle -- bouncy, catchy, tuneful and shallow.

I'll stick with Minnelli's gut-wrenching version; it may be over the top, but it sure is moving, especially the one recorded at the later concert when she was exhausted and sweaty and *looked* like she'd been through emotional hell. That's one of the most powerful performances of any kind I've ever seen -- and not just of this song.

Eydie was a class act always. Not much of that going around anymore. Pity.
