New Adirondack Backcountry Skiing at Jenkins Mtn

Deep in the Adirondacks local Search and Rescue partners formed a new backcountry ski zone and study area. Professors at Paul Smith's College and Retired New York State Ranger Scott Van Laer set up a model for backcountry ski trails, with help of local skier Ron Konowitz. While the Adirondack Park and conservation system was founded in part by backcountry skiers in the early 1900s, modern administrators in the 90s failed to design ski trails into the master plan, resulting in the decay of historic trails and neglect of a budding user group. The Adirondack Powder Skier Association has been working to fix the bureaucratic errors and help modernize a system for low-impact backcountry ski trails. Scientific study of the impact of this winter user group has been useful at Jenkins Mountain as the area was able to be observed before any user impact, and continues to be studied. New York's Adirondack Mountains have a new place to backcountry ski at Paul Smiths near Saranac Lake.
