MatPat is very devoted to the FNAF lore. But it's honestly kinda funny how these things work. He'll release a theory and say that he thinks he's finally connected all the dots. But then some book, some game, or some teaser will drop and either confirm what he's saying is true or smash his entire theory to pieces in seconds. There is no middle ground. Fnaf lore is wild.

I do love how Matt explains it like an Story rather than an theory.

I'm personally more inclined to believe the version of Afton's childhood where his family owned the Fred Bear attraction. Because I don't think that version of events necessarily negates the childhood wonder the other version has. So while it doesn't have to take anything away from that series of events, it also adds the possibility that he is struggling to support a business he inherited, or maybe you could even tie his later desire to breathe life into things that aren't could be to his family business dying because the original Fred Bear passed away, leaving Afton to scramble to find a way to fill that void in the business. Because losing Fred Bear in that situation would be like losing a member of the family while that same tragedy would also create a financial crisis for your family and business. I just think there's more interesting and complex motivations if his family owned that business originally than if the idea just came from an attraction he saw as a child.

I’m excited for you guys to check out more of the lore.

I agree with the darker concept of William’s childhood. I’m a psych major and it’s always bothered me how a number of FNAF fans like to think of William as having been a loving father and husband at one point. Becoming a child murderer isn’t something that happens over night ☠️. In the novels, he’s a classic narcissist who’s a little…loopy I’ll say. He’s shown to not be good at thinking on his feet, which also makes sense with a more factor two type of psychopathy. I won’t go in depth, but true narcissism has deep roots in a person’s youth. And the way William is portrayed in the novels is the type of antisocial person who keeps others around him for his own benefit, not because he cares. Who knows what Scott intended tbh, I’m just applying my knowledge.

Honestly, I don't the abuse is needed for afton's backstory. He has a character trait that pushes him forward without that needed motivation, and it's obsession. He is obssessed with the animatronics and the restaraunt. There are plenty of serial killers who come from normal homes. Even fictional killers, like Michael Myers came from an everyday middle class family. While it is true that there is a gene to make you more likely to become a serial killer and can be activated by trauma, there are some people who are just off. I think Afton was possibly a sociopath. He can appear charming and friendly, but he has no problems breaking rules, harming others with little guilt, and his first kill was an impulse of violence and anger. He loves his children and grieves their loss, but manipulates michael with nightmares, and rather than stopping michael from scaring and abandoning his little brother, he kind of left it be, indicating he has trouble understanding other people's emotions. He later keeps blaming others for bad things happening. Henry caused his business to go bankrupt. Henry killed his son. Elizabeth didn't listen. Bad events happen and rather than thinking its his fault due to his actions, he blamed others. This is the list of traits of a sociopath:

-ignoring social norms and laws, or breaking rules at school or work, overstepping social boundaries, stealing, stalking and harassing others, and destroying property
-dishonesty and deceit, including using false identities and manipulating others for personal gain
-difficulty controlling impulses and planning for the future, or acting without considering the consequences
-aggressive or aggravated behavior, including frequent fights or physical conflict with others
-disregard for personal safety, or the safety of others
-little to no guilt or remorse, or a tendency to justify actions that negatively affect others

Afton shows most of these behavior in some way. Driving his wife and Michael away as he falls further and further into his obsession. I think Afton may have been a high functioning sociopath but was triggered into descent when his son died and after killing Charlette just embrassed it. Granted, this is speculation as this is based of small snippets from the games and theories flying around, but I think it fits with the broader scope of what afton was like.

I wish the lore of the original game ended in 3. 6 was a good ending too ngl, but everything after that just feels complicated for the sake of being complicated

I'm honestly excited to see y'all's reactions to the rest of his Ultimate Timeline videos. These were honestly his most interesting videos he's made in a very long time which is why I like seeing people's reactions to them.

the FNAF timeline is.... well "complicated" is an underestimate.

this is like his 5th version of the timeline at minimum

MatPat has solid basis for his theories but there it always feels like he has to make some odd reaches for some of his connections. I feel like it is often his assertions are what end up being the most wrong everytime.

I’m so glad you are reaction MatPats Ultimate Timeline he is one of the best Fnaf YouTubers out there and made me get into Fnaf when it game out almost 10 years ago. This timeline is the best one the community has from a narrative sense and like MatPat says some stuff might not fit but hey FNAF is not solved so not every theory someone has is going to be perfect

Love Mat and his vids but I deff wouldn’t take his word as gospel. This timeline has problems. However it is a good starting point.

Speaking of Timelines, I would like you to do Everglow’s Kingdom Hearts: Timeline Series at some point, you like Kingdom Hearts right? And you didn’t do all of the Games right? Maybe you could get a better understanding of things or not, regardless I think it’s worth a Watch.
