Niger Republic Severs Ties with Nigeria as Peace Talks Collapse

In a breaking development, the military junta in Niger Republic has taken the decision to cut off diplomatic ties with Nigeria following the failure of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis.

The impasse arose when ECOWAS issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum to avert any potential clashes with the junta.

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria responded by dispatching a high-powered delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) to meet with the coup leaders on Thursday.

However, the peace talks did not yield the desired outcome, as the delegation was only able to engage with representatives of the junta, unable to reach a consensus.

In the aftermath of the talks, Niger Republic has made the drastic move to sever diplomatic relations not only with Nigeria but also with Togo, its neighbouring country, France, its former coloniser, and the United States.
