I've always loved the way Chief says "Ah, Juicy Fruit." His tone of voice and facial expression both give you the idea that he is having a moment of nostalgia as he is looking at the stick of gum.

What I love most about this scene is the pure joy Mac has once he realizes The Chief has hoodwinked everyone at the hospital. It's as if he got a Christmas present knowing that he had an ally and a gentle soul right there with him that he could truly confide in and trust.

Chief finally had the courage to talk because of the confidence McMurphy instilled into him. He realized the world ain't such a tough place and when you develop confidence in yourself you can move mountains.

What I love about this scene is that it's just a genuine portrayal of two men who just want to be free.

Chief proves that playing dumb is sometimes better than being a threat.

For me, Chief was always the most memorable character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Chief...Will Sampson....
6 ft 8 inches tall. Competed in rodeos, his specialty was bronco busting. He was on the rodeo circuit when Michael Douglas was looking for a large Native American specifically for this great movie. Thank you, Michael Douglas for discovering this man!

And when you see the ending, you just know that it was Chief who was the one that"flew over the cuckoo's nest"

I thought the scene was a lot more emotional in the book since it's from Chiefs POV and you know how desperately he want to engage in conversation with McMurphy to warn him about the combine (and to finally speak after a decade). Still, I suppose it would surprise people who have never read the story.

Chief knew he could trust him, which makes the scene epically great!

I always felt that Ken Kesey had a very modern, very sensitively perceptive and open minded appreciation of the Native Americans in his book, particularly where Bromden remembers his past. I loved his Uncle Running and Jumping Fox (I think his name was). I also felt, from what I understand of Native American culture, that Bromden's choice to let everyone think he was deaf mute seems realistic for the cultures of Native American people, in that they value silence and stoicism, and at the same time, people's ignorance gives Bromden an edge over them, an advantage.

The greatest thing about this scene is that Mac is so happy to talk to a sane person; which includes all the staff as well. The two only sane people in an insane asylum and they are the inmates.

What ever you do make sure you put this film on your bucket list. Best film ever, and what a cast.

The silence in between chief’s first two lines is some of nicholson’s best acting ever
