Kaiser was down, unconscious or worse. Blood pooled around him. Jasmine was sprawled nearby, like her brother she wasn't stirring. Zeus was terrified that they might both be gone, she could not bear to lose them. Not now. But there was no place for fear. They had come this far together and Zeus would not allow all their many sacrifices to be in vain. The journey to this place had been terrible and fraught. A bitter fight below the city, a panicked blitz through the unformed lands of another dimension, only to be confronted at journey's end by Morleketh the Black himself. The dark wizard had not hesitated to strike down her friends. He had smiled as he did it. They had fallen trying to protect her. She could not afford to hesitate, for their sake she would fight back with everything she had. She would get them home.

"What makes you think you have the power to stop me?" Morleketh whispered through his pointed teeth. Zeus rose from her knees, and faced the dark wizard responsible for all of this death. All of her suffering.

"FENGIR!" Zeus yelled, tears in her eyes.

The wolf answered.

There was a howl and the bound wolf-spirit coiled before her, protecting her as he always had. The wolf bared its fangs at the black magician and snarled in rage. Zeus could feel the anger in Fengir's heart. It mirrored her own. She summoned that rage and pain, the loss and sorrow. Sparing a thought for the friends she could not stop to help, she unbound the seals she had kept on her power.

With a pop, the air pressure rose suddenly. There was an ear-splitting crack of thunder and brilliant light boiled through the black abyss of Morleketh's lair. Blinded and surprised, the dark master raised a gnarled hand to shield his face. When he lowered it again he was facing a very different young woman.

Her eyes blazed azure. They glowed like stars in the abject dark of the cavern. Lightning coursed over her limbs, sizzling, and arcing from the plates of her heavy gauntlets. Shafts of blue light swirled in the air around her, coalescing into a blade of energy that she clasped in her right fist. Wind whipped through the chamber, ruffling her hair. It too had changed. Instead of its usual raven black, it was luminous white and fizzed with the unleashed energy coursing through her being. Fengir too, had manifested in a new way. The wolf was huge, the size of a cart horse, its fanged muzzle spread in animal fury. It loomed over her shoulder, its gleaming eyes fixed on Morleketh with insatiable hatred. When it growled, the chamber vibrated. The hunting sound of an ultimate apex carnivore.

Zeus spoke, and there was a resonance in her voice that had not been there before. As if many voices were speaking at precisely the same time.

"Morleketh, " She said. "You have committed uncountable crimes and killed so many people in your unholy crusade. There can be no forgiveness for you. I swear, in the name of my friends, you shall be destroyed!" She took up her fighting stance. There was a crack as radiating lightning flashed between her hands. The dark wizard took a step backwards. For the first time since the young trio had arrived in this pit, there was fear in his voice.

"WHO ARE YOU?!" He yelled in frustration. He had spent years preparing, countless sacrifices, meticulous scheming. He refused to let some little girl in a wolf scarf ruin his plans now! He beseeched the dark gods, and summoned his vilest magics, ready to deal a tortuous death upon this troublesome interloper.

"I am Zeus." She announced. "And I am here to fight in the place of those who cannot." Her voice, though still resonating, grew quiet for a moment. "For my country. For my people." Her voice swelled again as she gave free rein to the power surging through her. Magical energy boiled off her limbs to scorch the ground around her. Her energy sword crackled in her fist as she raised it. "FOR MY FRIENDS! FOR FREEDOM!" She roared. Her glowing eyes burned into his.

Light flashed.

Thunder rumbled.

With Fengir at her side, she lunged forward, like a bolt of lightning racing to earth itself.

And the duel for the fate of the world began.
