You nailed it at the end. When the D850 came out, it was by far the best dslr camera ever made. When the Z7 and Z7ii came out, it was already behind the competition in many categories.

Fun episode 👍👍

What you not mentioning at all is the D850 is a pro body and Z7II is not a pro body, D850 has pro-style controls which have been on every pro body since Nikon F5 and F100, D2H/D2Hs/D2X and D200, D3/D3s/D3X and D700, D300, D300s, D4/D4s/D800E/D800E, D810, D5/D500/D850, D6, Z9 all the ones I mentioned above had the pro-style build and controls, they are built like a tank, great weather sealing, also D850 is way more responsive, has lighted buttons, and the list goes on which makes it way better than Z7/Z7II.

The controls which Z5/Z6/Z6II/Z7 and Z7II are based on date back to the Nkon N80, and then Nikon D100, D7000 series, D600, D750, D780, they are consumer or at most prosumer controls and designed bodies, they are not pro bodies.

So yeah people want a half-size pro body like the first ones I listed which are again D200, D300, D300s, D700, D800, D810, D850, as the Z8.

So yeah you compared by specs but you left out a lot that set them apart.

After I got the Z5 I went and added the Z7 II ti the kit. I gave it a good chance, returned it and instead purchased a D850, and THAT was when I had my "ahh Yes" moment when I put it in my hands, and I save $800. Specs are only good if you use all of them and as a photographer, the D850 wins hands down because it is a solid, robust camera with well thought out ergos that takes Gorgeous images with all that great F glass. I don't like the fact that all my D lenses are useless (except for manual) on the Z bodies. Specs aren't everything and this only feeds into the unsuspecting consumer with a case of GAS. Yes the Z (S) lenses are amazing but too amazing which can be boring at times. Ill take a great F mount lens over a standard Z lens any day because there is a certain look and character I feel Z has lost due to being too good.
In my hands when it counts the Z7 II is no match for my D850.

Excellent presentation, and you are 1000% correct. Having said that as an owner of two D850 and as a non-professional, it will be a long time before I let go of my D850s. I know nikon makes several cameras that out perform the 850. What I have with my cameras is a relationship a feeling and a knowledge that my own skills have not yet surpassed the D850s technical limitations. The D850 was and still is technical masterstroke and an amazing value on the used market. A particularly good choice for someone entering the photography world a very expensive place to be playing in.

Great video. Really appreciate the no nonsense quick bullet points. Short and sweet! Will you be doing a follow up video now that the Z8 is out?

The D850 is a great camera, but I appreciate IBIS, AF point coverage to the edges, and never worrying about lens adjustment or calibrations. Still, nothing feels as great as a DSLR in hand.

I replaced my D850 with a Z7ii and was immediately frustrated. I couldn’t focus in low light, my friend’s Cannon and my Fujifilm were doing a better job. I have had the Z7ii now for 6 months and I still miss more shots than with my D850.

A quality DSLR has a Pavlovian reaction for me. Shutter and Mirror flap along with the bigger grip just creates a more visceral experience so I love it still. If I'm being honest, my results from the Z7 II are superior. Yes. I don't think the Z7 was intended as a replacement other than sensor specs/MP. I'm thrilled with the Z9 and have no use for a Z8...but I'm sure my GAS will take over and I'll preorder it day one when/if it is announced.

you under estimate the power of the dark side, USBC in a pinch being able to charge on the go or charge would shooting or send about is helpful. Good video though, the z series hasn't had the love attachment feels for the most part, hopefully the gen 3s can change that

I got my D850 about a year and half ago, after a year being torn apart between it and the Z7 II. Never regretted the decision, love the camera and probably will never sell it, but I'll be blunt: it both cameras were at the same price here in Brazil at the time, I'd have gone with the Z7 II, mainly due to IBIS and access to Z glass - the two things I miss the most. However, for some strange reason, the Z7 II was (and still is) 50% more expensive here than the D850. That was a deal breaker to me... Hell, even the Z6 II was about the same price at the time than the D850. It got cheaper now, but not by much.

Now, if you ask me if I were to upgrade my D850 to a Z8, my answer would be no. I'd rather get a Expeed 7-equipped Z6 III for better AF and low-light performance, and keep the D850.

My main peeve is the view finders. I don't want to stare at another screen, I want to see in real time and I stare at a computer screen for hours everyday, I don't want to add to it with the mirrorless. Add to it the battery life and the feel of the D850 camera made me buy the D850 over mirrorless. I don't do video so that didn't matter.

Mirrorless has the big advantage as showing the what you see is what you get. While having the Z9, and the D 850 is still better than Z8 in AF for subjects against contrasty background

I own both a Z5 & a D700. The Z5 takes awesome pics but for example I just hate the fact that you have to dive into a menu just to activate the self timer. The D700 like its younger sibling is a pro camera with more physical buttons, the Zed series cameras (excluding the Z9) are just cheap.

Just bumped onto this, and found your video to be one of the most accurate on YT to date. There's plenty photographers that still use the Nikon D500, the Canon 5D Mk1, or some older camera body because they prefer the sensor rendering to other, newer models, which would clearly be outperformed by the newer mirrorless ones on most specs, but not on usability or optical resolution. It does depend on each use case what tool is better, but sometimes there's nothing that beats the flavour a well designed sensor gives, even though the newer generation one might be twice the megapixels and the speed of processing. I just got the D850 this year, although I could've gotten any mirrorless on the market, because there was nothing to beat performance to coin ratio, and be proven as incredible performant at the same time as being backwards compatible with the lenses that I had without further investment. It would've made sense to get the latest and greatest only if photography were my main activity, and I really needed those extra features. But the D850 is also sort of mirrorless in the LV mode, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything at all.

I’m that type of guy that still exists “at that time” I guess. I also cannot get why a smaller form factor is better? What I really envy with the Z system is the mount and the new line-up of excellent lenses! I only care for image quality and the quality of the optics is no 1 in that category since Nikon haven’t made any progress with their sensors in regards to dynamic range and resolution since the launch of the D850. Maybe a forthcoming Z7 III will change that? If that happens I will get one and hurry to slap a battery grip on it to mitigate the toy-factor (Sony virus).

I've sold my D850 just for Z7, after that I feel like it sparked a new joy for photography. I have much smaller and better lens, stabilised primes thanks to IBIS and eye AF. I now don't have to think that much what gear I take because I can take all of it and it is much lighter.

Автор

Well... they are different.

D850 is bigger, feels more rugged and better in the hand and moreover the AF is not in love with backgrounds all the time like the Z6-2.

Other than that... I love my Z6-2, but I liked my D850 even more. 😅

As for glass: I'd take the ancient f-mount 150mm Sigma all day over the 105 Z Nikkor. They're not even close (to me).

Well, I guess I'm a weirdo anyways. 😅

I still shoot with the D850 and I know with mirrorless tech I can just point and shoot. With my D850 I have to put the box on the eye but it's something about the D850. When I put it in my hands it feels right and I've gotten so good with it. You didn't give it a point for build quality but it's the build quality and performance combination is why we think the D850 is legendary.

Well, your video was one year ago. Nowadays, we do have the Z8, which is a baby Z9. The D850 is of course, the best DSLR ever being made by Nikon. I don't buy any of these, out of my budget, and i am already settled with older FF gear, from CaNikon and Sony. :) Think 5D, 5D II, D700, A7, A7S II. Shooting Nikon since the FM, over the F90x, F80, F100, then moved to the D700, back into the heyday. Also owned a few DX Nikons before, the D70s, D40, D80, D90 & D7000.

Nowadays, the Z mount (semi)Pro alternative to the D850 is simply the Z8 Nikon.
