You know what is good? Freedom to live according to the culture and values you believe in.

Assimilation is easy to opine about in the abstract, but when you try to apply it to individuals, you realize it’s something that just happens over time and generations. It’s not something we should try to encourage or discourage.

Example: My in-laws moved from China 30 years ago. They speak English well but otherwise they think of themselves still as mostly Chinese. But my wife moved when she was six and thinks of herself as mostly American.

Something weird is happening and a huge number of comments are being autodeleted for no reason.

I am fair minded; I disrespect all religions equally.

Our common language is "bad English". Most people speak it, including many Americans.

Live according to the values you believe in and the cultures you want to join

Well it depends what you are expected to assimilate into?!! Really you shouldn't be expected into assimilating into nothing because Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Expression Beliefs, Freedom to Practice whatever you want not as long you are not harming anyone is covered under you 1st Amendment Rights.

It's amusing that current cultural appropriation or assimilation backlash has originated from the US, a nation with an amalgumated culture that has roots from all over the globe.

Yes. Hands down. Any proposed down side pales in comparison to the peace and prosperity by the flexibility of conflict resolution when cultures are familiar with each other and not interested in enforcing arbitrary differences.

I have never saluted the flag or said the Pledge of Obedience. Sounds about half as logical as worshipping the main character in a book that makes absolutely no sense...

The funny thing about the US is that it's culture is multi cultured. By that I mean we are built on so many different cultures so learning to just live the way you wish as long as you are not forcing others to do it your own way is about the best we can do and hope for. That's as truly American as can be. Live your life, don't force it on others and don't break laws. Keep an eye on the government and get involved in local politics when they get too oppressive. That should be enough.

I always considered myself a Patriot, I just don't have to yell it out to prove I am one. I just donated a small amount of money to a hospital to help the unfortunate. That to me is being a good Patriot. No need to shout it out.

To answer the thumbnail, yes it is. That does not mean you forget the culture you came from, but you are part of the American family now so you do family things.

Integration does not require giving up one's own cultural origins completely (religion, mother tongue, customs and traditions). This would be assimilation (alignment) = complete adjustment to the majority society with loss of language and culture of the country of origin

I am native and a descendent of those that were forced to assimulate into western culture. The negative side affects have been felt for generations, however, we are reclaiming our culture.

I was raised in the 60’s. We’re PRian but Spanish wasn’t allowed to be spoken. We were not allowed to eat PRian foods. We lived in a white neighborhood. We looked white. My mother didn’t want our house to smell like or look like PRians lived there. The Italians used to refer to PRians as ‘freakin-Ricans’. We were Catholic and anything cultural we did reflected the Irish and Italian cultures. Jews were scorned. Now at 64 I still can’t speak Spanish even though I passed Spanish I & II in college. I know what racism in white America is. I was there as a child and saw it all, especially by the Catholic schools, churches and people. I didn’t know I was PRian until I was 12. We were told to tell people we were from Spain.

Yes. To have a cohesive society, there must be core shared values. You don't become the same as everyone because you have your own preferences and lived experiences. But, we should all share a core set of values that we live by. Let's say, the U.S. Constitution. Some countries use a national religion for a core set of values.

As humans, we should take the best parts of humanity and assimilate those into our lives to be the best versions of ourselves.
