I'm packing my bag for two street photography walks - one in Vienna and one in Boston. What do I need to take?

There are only a few spaces left for these walks -

when i went to europe, several years ago now, i had one camera, one lens, and that was it. i didn't miss anything i didn't want to miss, and my bag was light and nimble.

Great tips and advice. As much as I have wanted to get a new camera bag, I've resisted. I ended up getting a backpack insert and I use a beat-up back-pack I had back in college. No big signs saying COME TAKE MY CAMERA GEAR!! 🤣🤣

Alex, I also wanted to say that your channel has changed my photography so much. Thank you! Actually to be more specific, you've changed my relationship with my camera. I just watched an old video of yours about your imposter syndrome and the start of this channel. This resonated so much with me. But you helped me detach from all the noise in the photography media out there. Learning about how to think about PHOTOGRAPHY and not about gear and not about comparison to others. I stopped saying to myself, "why take that picture....that is so stupid. No one would take a shot of this...". I turned this around and turned this into "No one would take this shot....but *I* am going to." I can't tell you how freeing this has been. Your other videos about developing one's own style, also, brilliant. You've helped me listen to myself, discern my taste, get over the feeling that my photographs aren't like the photos I see everywhere in books and online. That's the whole point! You've helped me self-critique and discern what criticism is worthy of my attention or not all with improvement being goal no matter how incremental that improvement may be.

Thank you thank you thank you!

I took a couple road trips to Seattle and just brought my Olympus 35mm point and shoot. Just a 4 hour drive so I could have taken anything. But wow I was so happy with this tiny camera. Really freed up my creative flow.

Loved the ultra vox quote you dropped in there. The street view tip is pure gold

Actually did a photo walk in Vienna today in harsh light. Boy oh Boy this City IS Architecture and Street Photography GOLD! Even the absolute Rookie Like me can frame up great shots in no time. Unfortunately I only have my cell Phone with me 😢.

Great video Alex. Thanks for the Street View tip, brilliant idea 👍 I love M43 for street photography, nice and light. My Lumix GX9 with the Leica 12-60 lens is all I use these days. ❤

Hi Alex, you are well prepared and it's something we can all learn from your planning. Thanks Alex 😊.

We always travel by train in Europe, where they don’t measure your bags, and you can just have all your stuff with you, nothing is in the hold — also arriving in places by train just feels so much cooler (and you’re not miles out of town)

The Streetview avenue leading up to the flack tower, and the fun fare, tugged on that Third Man vibe.

Change to micro 43, save space and weight, gain good IBIS and an EVF.

I always carry minimal kit with me, mostly just a camera and my trusty 40mm prime lens. I also make a lot of use of street view to see potential places to photograph. Living in a big city I am very keen not to just end up in the usual photography hotspots everyone else goes to.

Looking forward to meeting you here! Excellent recommendations. I usually also pack (a bit) too much when travelling ....

I use APS-C (Fujifilm) because the cameras and lenses are lighter. My basic. kit would be my X-Pro3, XF 35mm f/1.4 (=52mm FF) and the Sigma 18-50mm f/2, 8 DC DN (27-75mm FF). This setup is very light. It gives me prime lens at the focal length I use most, and a zoom that covers any other focal length I my desire I need. I, of course also throw in batteries, a charger and basic camera cleaning kit and extra SD cards. I also have a tiny flash that I might take if I really think I will use it. But I usually leave it at home.

I travel a lot and photography is always a significant part of that (ask my wife what traveling with me is like). I use to travel with a lot of equipment but as I’ve gotten older and my joints only occasionally functioned like they were suppose to I had to lighten my load. My basic kit for short trips was a camera with a 24-120 mm which gave some focal length discretion and wasn’t too bulky. For longer trips I would add in a 12-24 mm and, on rare occasion, a relatively compact longer lens. It all has to fit into a sling type bag that hangs in the middle of my back because I can’t take the weight on my hip that occurs with a shoulder bag. Getting old is not a photographers best friend.

I was totally blown away when I saw the augarten. I grew up next to it and next month I am going to move with my family again to that hood. It is an Amazon region in Vienna. I used to be in the augarten almost every day when I was a kid.

Back in my international traveling days (late '90s-early '00s), I often brought a small point-and-shoot camera with my SLR, mainly because, in some of the places I went, walking around with an SLR around my neck made me a target. Also, just having that little P&S in my pocket meant I can walk around mostly unburdened by a bag. I got some great pics on that little camera (The Olympus Stylus Epic... which I still have).

Street view is an great idea, thanks Alex. I find thinking about the conditions and what I expect to shoot helps in deciding which lenses I should bring.
