This has become one of my go-to recipes. So good.

Thank you! I just made the best Dal Tarka ever. The wooden churning device was very easy to use and made all the difference as far as the texture (I found mine at Patel Bros in Jackson Heights, I think any Indian market that sells kitchenware would have it).
WOW!!!

Thanks Hema, i have been hearing from both sides of the isle. I teach Indian cooking to mostly non-Indians, I tell them to give daal a good stir with a heavy spoon which works quite well! And thank you for reading my blog.

I loved the Minimalist and miss him. And I love the music.

Why doesn't this have a recipe? I have the NY Times cooking app and couldn't find it there, and the link is just an article - not a recipe.

I'm not intimidated. Why? I was just wondering where I could get one. I don't remember seeing it at the local Patel Bros.

I grew up in North India, never saw anyone churning Daal like that, this is ridiculous and will intimidate a non-Indian cook for sure. I just use a heavy spoon and STIR IT. Besides, most Indians cook Daal in a pressure cooker.

I’m Indian and never seen anyone use that churning device. Very bizarre

Only cumin turmeric and ginger. Guess you need more spices for proper tarka

The recipe that followed the video is not the same dish.  Julie Sahni is making a red dal and in the recipe it calls for split green mung beans and it says to put what was the Tadka ingredients in the video in the boiling water with the dal.  In this recipe the Tadka is only mustard seeds, ginger, curry leaves and cumin.  Where is the correct recipe?
