I met a fellow hispanic who was the first Mexican-American generation and the first one in his family to obtain his degree. His brothers later on obtain their degrees as well. . Their parents at some point put them to pick cotton and fruit. When he decided to take some time off from college, he was made to work in the field, and after that, he return to college with more determination to never return to the field and to also bring his parents out of the fields. His hands were really damaged even with protective gear.

Edit: I looked it up, 1935. So that $100 turns out to be roughly $2, 200. Now I see why they’re all so worked up over winning it! That’s a lot of money for working people

Wonderfull movie. Stellar performances in a sweet sleeper. Excellent movie choice for a sofa surfing warm blanket hugging bad weather day. Misfits against the system. And ya feel better for the watching.

This is what happens when your don’t diversify your crop yield. Only cotton when everyone else is only planting cotton. Yes u can make clothes with it but it’s not something you an eat. So when everyone who planted cotton only crashed the cotton prices then everyone was hungry bc no one was planting enough food

Do not remember seeing this movie, but I am guessing that she wins that $100 dollar prize money plus gets top dollar for her cotton and comes out on top before the movie ends.
