why not just use the dead center directly in the hole instead of the wooden stick what is the purpose

The tool to hold the lathed part is just absolutely beatiful, it's a work worthy to be in a museum.

The sheer amount of things I have learned from this channel is just amazing.

Chronova video watched this morning and now Clickspring this evening! The best of YT engineering.

Superb machining on an other-worldly (almost heavenly) face plate.

That faceplate is a work of art. I love the stick centering trick, very cool and simple, yes you could do the same running between centres but where's the fun in that. Showing other ways of working is teaching and that is the best thing. Sharing knowledge is the best. You are too damned good.

When I saw the art of the recesses laid over the plate, I thought to myself "He'll be using a wooden skewer to get those centered properly". It really feels like I'm learning!

That skewer trick is genius! You just need to sort through the pack til you find a straight one.

These videos are straight up theraputic. The always-on-point music, the fantastic camerawork, the hum of the lathe... I can almost smell the faint trace of oils and freshly cut brass.
Thank you, Chris. ☺

Using the pegwood/wooden skewer as a poor man's dial indicator to get the part centered was really clever! Gonna have to remember that if I ever get a lathe. Need a garage to put it in first.

G’Day Chris, lovely to see that faceplate again - I’d forgotten about the engraving you had done. Superb! 👍

Your videos are a balm in a chaotic world.

Chris, your videography skills are certainly on par with your machining skills!

I love the simplicity of the wobble stick 👍👍

I believe the purpose is to show you how to use these tools the way it was done before they had dial indicators, how someone in the late 19th century could setup a lathe project accurately.

Great work mister. A achievement on a small lathe.

You gotta stop reading my mind! "Well, that's lovely, but how do you center the piece?!" And then you just show it!
Another fantastic video!

This is probably one of those questions that can be answered with: "It's just not worth the effort to do." But all the little brass chips from lathe and milling, do you sweep or vacuum those back up to add to a a bit of scrap in a crucible if you ever have to melt brass to cast a piece that will need to be machined?

It's a curiosity of mine that's more of a passing thought. Either way, that's quite stellar work you share with the world.
