Key international relationships are being profoundly tested by the war in Ukraine, especially the alliance between China and Russia – the two countries at the top of the U.S. empire’s hit list. How does China’s government view Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine? Will the relationship between the two countries grow closer or more distant as the western powers attempt to cut Russia off from the global economy? What consequences will this have for the entire world?

Brian is joined by Dr. Ken Hammond, professor of East Asian and Global History at New Mexico State University, founding director of the Confucius Institute at New Mexico State University, and activist with Pivot to Peace.

I don't understand Americans and the west. Why do you keep wanting China to condemn Russia? Does condemnation and sanctions work? By the way, a lot a Chinese are happy with their government.

I don’t think your summary of the Russian battle plan is correct. The Ukrainian army had been in continuous combat for 8 years. In that time they have also been training extensively with NATO. You could say, the Ukrainian military is the model of what you face if you fight NATO? Certainly the war that the are fighting now is nothing any NATO country has fought since WWII, bombing poor countries for 78 days or 40 days and mopping up later doesn’t count. Also, with the concentration of all the better units (the cream of the crop) on the Donbass contact line, and well dug in, would not give any serious military planners an idea of a push over. So, Syrian tactics, isolating the capital, and the various Ukrainian armies around the country was always the plan. Isolate, deny supplies and RE-enforcements allows the Russian military to systematically destroy Ukrainian army units. We know this is a serious Russian operation as they seem to be about to conduct a change over of units in Ukraine with fresh units from Russia. If it all goes as planned then this will be a great feat and show the professionalism of the Russians at all levels, militarily and politically.

The Feb 4 declaration kinda makes it clear that there will be no Sino/Russian wedge.

I believe it was a real tough decision to go to war and clear the messy house in Ukraine. Ukraine is a close relative of Russia. it is rather a sacrifice to go into and uproot the bad elements that cause instability for their fragile economy and social coherence. At least Russia has tried its best to avoid the targets where it may cause civilian casualties.

The language of the UN charter says something about "imminent danger". Obviously we are getting our legal team out of the legal team closet to define what "imminent" danger can mean. This is the whole story. This is the whole game. Do we pretend that the war started last month or do we consider every little detail. It might be a good idea to consider every little detail. Often times the US state dept. legal team is used to approve fraud. That is their legal precedent.

It would have been over in a week had USA/Europe not pushed for his overthrow.
And certainly if Russia did not have nuclear weapons USA would have bombed them.
Europe/West would not have been choked up about the death toll of Russians the way they speak of Ukraine.

There is no violation of UN charter.

Two days before Russian actions, Putin recognised the Donbas as independent nations and annouced a formal protection for this region. Instead of ceasing the bombing, the Ukrainian army intensified its attacks, and that gave the Russians Casus belli in defence of its protectorate state. This is how the NATO strategy of Kosovo was adopted for Donbas.

Except that Donbas had declared indepedece since 2014. Kosovo was made up to justify a war. Donbas is 70-80% Russian, justifying the protection. Kosovo had minor Americans or NATO ethinicities. There were 15k dead in Donbas and more than 50k displaced in an 8 year war, Kosovo was a fabricated PR piece against the largest socialist block that didnt get nukes.
