Cost/Effort/Return Poplars are by FAR the best crop.

make sure your selling when the price is high - January.

Cost / Return they win because you only need to prep once so you can just lease the equipment.
They are average for return per acre because they take a long time to grow - but since you can skip time I don't think that matters.

Tips for easy returns;
Spend money on land, not equipment. The more land the better the income.
Set the AI planting width to 1m so they don't leave gaps.
You only need to plant once so lease the tractors and planters - I buy 5 fields and get 10 planters. Set one to up down and one to headers and you only need minimal input.
You don't need to prep the field - No matter what's in the field it will just plant over it.

Poplars don't wither so there is no need to store the woodchips. (The whole harvest/store/pickup/sell is a waste of time anyway) - Harvest in January and sell it directly.
Buy the fields near the sell point for best returns.
Since you only harvest every second Jan you can lease the equipment for minimal cost. Get one per field (AI) and a truck to deliver.
Use the cash saved to buy more fields.

I use better time scale to make sleeping easier (quality of life) and Krome 1180 Cargo harvesters just because I think they look cool.

You can start with $1 million - and get a $4 million back the first harvest.

If you manually fill in the gaps left by the AI when planting you can get quite a bit more in the field.

A sweet maze you could make with that field.

The 2.4m gap is how you would have to harvest it in real life
