How to Make a Frequency Table | Statistics Exercises

Показать описание
What is a frequency table and how do we make one? That is the subject of today's statistics lesson! Organizing data is important, and the frequency table is another tool we can use for data organization.

There are two main columns in a frequency table, the first is the column with our distinct data points, and the second is the frequency column, which tells us how many times each data point occurred in the data set. More columns can be included in slightly more complicated frequency tables, but these are the two main columns we use in today's lesson.
One other column that we use that is not necessary but can be useful, is the "Tally" column. We use this column to tally up the frequency of each data point, as we look through the data set. So the tally column is basically a scratch work column that we use to make the frequency column.
Sometimes you will find data sets that have a large number of distinct data points, where each data point usually has a very small frequency. In cases like these, it is not useful to give each data point a distinct row. Instead, we need to group the data into different categories, and then give each category its own row, so that we are counting the frequency of data points occurring in specific categories. We will go over this more in another lesson.
