How to create Vangelis' signature horn sound from Bladerunner and Chariots of Fire using reFX Vanguard, ES2 and Arturia CS80V2 in Apple Logic Studio 9.

Great tutorial. Arturia CS80 comes closest imo but then you'd expect it to, seeing as the real CS80 was the instrument used.

Hey! Thanks for the comments...

It doesn't really matter what synth you use. The important thing to get the rich sound is to have 2 Sawtooth waveforms that are slightly out of sync with each other to get that fat, phasey sound. You should definitely be able to get there with a Virus...

Also important is the filter envelope & reverb algorithm.

ES2 is one of the stock synths from Logic, the other two are Arturia CS-80V and reFX's Vanguard (both 3rd party).

Awesome tutorial. Very straight to the point and informative. I like the fact that you can apply the same sound programming procedure into any VST synth that would have at least 2 oscillators. I wish though you could produce a separate video for CS-80 sound. Is there any way to enlarge the size of the GUI of the CS-80 (without changing the monitor's resolution)? Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing this info. I'm pretty impressed about that EOS reverb. Gotta have it. ;) Cheers!

@cookiegreenwood I read on Wikipedia that garageband is able to use third-party plugins that adhere to the Audio Units protocol so you should be able to install some synths that have greater control than the limits on the bundled instruments?

I haven't used garageband all that much but I would try to download a few freeware plugins and see whether they are available for you to use. It really doesn't matter which synth you use as long as you can change waveform and oscillator tuning...

I created it myself - basically switched everything off and then saved the preset as #default so it's the first thing to load. Check out my other tutorial for saving defaults....

This is so amazing!  I just started working with CS80V2 and if you don't have the time to do a tutorial on the setup, is there any chance you might share your preset. Since I've been a little boy I've been dying to play with sounds like these.  Just amazing stuff!

@fredtrace Thanks for the comments. It is not a preset, I just followed the same procedure as for the others synths but had it created already to save time for the video. If you follow the settings I have you should be able to get there quite easily. If I have time I will get a video up of just the CS-80 sound...

Third party plugins will appear in the menu under AU plugins at the bottom of the plugin list.
