The problem here quite possibly is Americans don't see England as England but as the UK and don't actually understand the difference.
Now here's where it can get complicated. The UK is a country of countries. England is just one of those countries, along with Scotland, Wales, note the spelling, and of course Northern Ireland. Together we make up the UK. I can happily make that more complicated by saying the full title being The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I'm English born, living in Wales. I would of been more surprised if they actually recognized them..
