Drawing on the 2021 iPad 9th Gen Review

The 9th gen iPad isn't the most exciting tablet Apple makes but it does have some nice upgrades this year that makes it a really great entry level tablet for artist and illustrators.

Wow! Thanks so much for the huge shout out, Brad! Your take on Bob was superb!

31 layers might not sound very impressive when compared to 100+ of the Pro but that's still way more layers than what you get with traditional art while also being able to correct mistakes.

Now this is the kind of review we look for. Simple, elegant enough to be understood by any category of audience. On top of that, providing reasonable opinions while considering differences within range of products. No biases, whatsoever. I’m glad to have subscribed to Brad. And we get a bonus free drawing every time! Thanks man. 😎👍

We have an iPad from 2014 at home and it still works good enough to watch YouTube or Netflix from time to time. It’s pretty slow but apps don’t actually crash that often. I don’t doubt at all a new iPad will be great for years to come, even if it’s a lower end one.

Got mine today, 64 GB and of course the Apple Pencil. It's great, I love it, totally recommend this iPad to everyone. The value is just insane!

I don't have any apple devices and I'm looking for a tablet to stream, draw, read, etc, and I don't have a big budget but I want something long lasting, so I'm considering this one because the price is too good. Now I think I'm going to get it. Thanks for the review.

Big "thank you" for this review. Looks like the 9th gen is a great first iPad for me because I could watch you draw, and see you're diving down deep into light and shadow and fine details way more than I'm used to being able to do. Great to see that I can start at a price point, and grow my abilities.

One thing I like about the base iPad vs the Pro is that battery life in Procreate is much better. I think it has to do to the 60hz display vs 120hz on the pro. I think Procreate has the Pro running at 120hz constantly and it kills battery life.

got my ipad 9 today and it's gorgeous! the 256 is great bc I can load it with a bunch of weighty rhythm games and not worry about it filling up (which is a big problem with my 64gb phone), and for my amateur doodles the lack of laminated screen is a non-issue

I'm really getting called out that the only reason why I can't decide between iPad 9th gen and iPad Air is because the iPad air looks so much better. 😅 This iPad 9th gen would have been perfect if iPad just reduced the size of the bezels

Pretty easy decision for me to purchase an iPad gen 9 with the first apple pen. So much functionality for so little money. Not afraid to toss it in my bag and take it with me wherever I go. For work and play.

Since Apple seems to be dead set in keeping this iPad design, they could have used it as a case study to see how sales (and reception) would be if they moved the front camera to the long side (camera in landscape).

Great review! I just picked up this combo for my daughter for Christmas! She is quite the artist and I think she is going to love this setup! Thank you!

FEB 8, 2023: Been using the iPad Mini 2 since 2016 with no issues. But now it's time for a drawing tablet. So, I purchased the iPad 9 with Pencil 1 for a total cost of $368.00 before tax. I hope I'll be happy. 🙂

Yep! iPads can definitely last a long time. I think one of my family members got about seven or eight years of actual use out of the iPad 2 (from 2011), and while it’s not really getting used more and the software is definitely old, the thing still powers on just fine, and could probably still work as a photo viewer or an e-reader. Mind, this is ten years after it released!. Same family member is currently using a 12.9 2015 Pro, and that is still happily working away and getting updates.

And I agree with your daughter. I also use an iPad 6 all the time at work for teaching (iPad Pro 11 inch at home for my own art). The 6 is maybe beginning to slow down a little, but still nothing that makes it feel frustrating or hard to use, and I’d guess I’m still a good couple years or so from needing to upgrade. I love the additional layers for art projects on my Pro and the larger storage, but the base model iPads really are nothing to sneeze at, and the 6 has been and continues to be a great little work device.

I'm really liking the new style and editing of your videos. It's like a refresh of the channel. Keep it up!

I mean, my friend recently sold her children's 2nd gen ipad minis for $150 each, and she received offers and sold them off in half a day. Both were still working perfectly, the kids just outgrew them. These things have years in them.

Whatever equipment you use, everything seems to flow smoothly. It's also a skill. It's fun to look at the drawing.
