adding custom error bars in Excel

how to add custom error bars to each of many bars in a data series (not computed by Excel, but from some other calculations).

MS Excel may not be your first choice for plotting - but it's often the only thing available (e.g. in some UG lab classes, where installations, OSes etc are very mixed, but everyone has a version of M$ Office)
