Eurasian Nuthatch - Ninja on Tree Trunk

I feel that Eurasian Nuthatches are relatively not scared of humans, and I'm always happy when they come close to me.

It's so much fun to watch them because they are acrobatic birds. Great Spotted Woodpeckers can only climb up tree trunks, but Eurasian Nuthatches can also climb down headfirst. Eurasian Nuthatches are the only bird in Japan capable of doing this!

By the way, Eurasian Nuthatches are called "Goju-kara" in Japanese, and here in Hokkaido only "Shirohara-goju-kara", a subspecies of "Goju-kara", can be seen. "Shirohara-goju-kara" is written as "白腹五十雀" in Japanese Kanji, and "白腹" means white belly.
