Register nurse, physical therapist, nurse practitioner and physician assistant ARE NOT biology majors. RN usually requires two years program at least (associate degree), physician assistant is a master entry mid-level health practitioner job any major can apply to the program, nurse practitioner on the other hand is for experienced nurse after obtaining higher degree in master or doctor. And physical therapist are doctoral degree entry job. All these four ARE NOT biology major and all REQUIRES studying in a different field.

All staff nurse positions that I've seen want you to have specifically a nursing degree (usually bachelors level) because it requires students to participate in clinical rotations. Never seen an employer accept solely a biology degree.

Hi @Calvin! Great vid you have here! I am a biologist finishing my medical degree.

I'd just like to add, you'd actually need to take up a different course to become a Physical Therapist, and a Registered Nurse, and take their respective board certification exams in order to practice, which you cannot fulfill if you take a course in Biology.

For biomedical engineers, a separate course is offered for this field. A lot of the much-needed skills are not taught to Biology majors, that are needed in biomedical engineers. (I know because I work as a part-time research consultant to a biomed engr.)

And most importantly, biologists are not allowed to come up with a patient's diagnosis, and treatment plan, as only licensed medical doctors can (as stated by the law).

More power to you Calvin! And sending support to our future biologists out there!

Remember that for all the medical careers he mention there is further medical schooling in order to obtain the proper licensing

You forgot to mention becoming a research scientist (PhD), professorships, pharma rep, physician, and many other career paths that certainly pay more than $80k/year. But I respect your inclusion of jobs that don’t get much attention from bio majors.

How come nobody is talking about Food Industry? I work as Quality Assurance Supervisor in Food Industry, starting pay was 65K in Texas.
My degree was Bachelors in Biology and Microbiology

It’s kinda crazy how studying Biotechnology opened other doors for me. It’s a little bit more technical, but only a few extra classes are required. Directly out of college, you can make $40/hour as a biologist assuming you did a couple of internships. Or have some experience. Even then working as a research assistant isn’t bad either.

Forensic scientist too. A lot of times you can get a bachelors in biology and masters in forensics. There’s not a ton of bachelors in forensics that’s FEPAC certified so Biology is the route a lot take.

I have a biology degree and was able to land a job as a medical laboratory scientist in a clinical laboratory. I’m shocked this job didn’t make your list. It pays great too. In Maryland most jobs starts at $30

Is there anyone who has a biology degree below a PHD who has had success in getting a career that doesnt require you to be far from home?

Nurses from a four year bachelor's program will graduate with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). Two year colleges will graduate you with an associates of Science degree (AS). Universities have their own separate nursing departments, so no, you will not graduate with a degree in biology; it will be in nursing.
If you graduate with a general biology degree, you will have to go back to nursing school to become and RN.

Thank you for making this video because I was thinking of getting into Biological Science this Fall in a community college and was also afraid of what job opportunity I would get after graduation.

Project Manager and a Business Development Manager should be on this list. I have a bachelors in biology and a PMP certification and have held both of these positions. Both make around $110k - $140k+ (in Minnesota). Business Dev. can make more depending on commission.

I plan on being a homesteader, but I'm here to root for the underdogs of the science fields or biology majors. As a future homesteader, I say that there is no useless knowledge.

On the other hand, I feel that botany can help with independent living. There are plenty of plants out there to do research on.

Thanks. This is very informative but I think you should've listed the ridiculous amount of experience they want also for these jobs.
